VPN on router for Xbox One X (or Series X)

I recently upgraded my modem and router to current top notch stuff…big upgrade from my old equipment. In doing so, I now have the option to install my VPN on the router itself. I currently only run my VPN on my various devices (laptops and phones). Obviously, running a VPN at the router level has it’s security/privacy advantages, which I like. I have some concerns about running my VPN on my router aside from anything Xbox related. Occasionally, the VPN needs to be disabled for some sites, and not sure how to do that when that happens if it’s on the router.

But back to my point regarding running the VPN on the router for just the sake of the Xbox. Latency increases and speeds decrease on my other devices when the VPN is on. I assume this would be the case for the Xbox as well? My xbox is hardwired to the router. If the latency and speeds are affected, is it enough to notice in PvP games? Do the pros outweigh the cons? Is there anything one can do to help lower latency when the Xbox is connected to a VPN router?

Thanks.

Why don’t you have separate routers for each?

- a router for ‘clear’ net

- another for VPN tunnel net

I thought about that, but seems unnecessary for me. I did see that suggestion by a network/privacy guy on YouTube somewhere.

do you remember the youtube link?

Not the link but it was the Rob Braxman channel I believe. It wasn’t about Xbox specifically, but just running two different routers - one VPN, one non-VPN. That way you can connect to whichever one you need. Makes sense, just not sure it’s for me. I have VPN on phones and computers, so they always have it anywhere I go. I am just trying to figure out if my it makes sense for me for the other devices like Roku, Apple TV and Xbox. Xbox is the one that is more difficult to decide, as I do play competitive style pvp games like MMOs and FPS games, where the extra delay could be an issue.

In that case it might make sense for you to build own vpn. Internet has plenty of guide on how to do that
