VPN = lower latency?

I’m currently on ultimate in an unsupported country. Why when I use a VPN connected to miami gives me 64ms of latency and with the VPN off is about 95ms? Aren’t VPNs supposed to add more latency?

It depends on the routing.

For those who say it’s measuring the latency from the VPN to GFN, it’s not. The game feels way more responsive when using the VPN. Is there a way to improve the routing? I used to have 64ms of latency without the VPN when I was on free tier.

I think what you’re seeing is the lower ping between GFN and your VPN’s exit location server. The actual latency between your input and the game is likely significantly higher.

Many things at play here. It might be that your ISPs routing to the GFN server is longer than their routing to the VPN and the VPNs routing to GFN combined.

It might be as someone else said it’s only detecting latency back to the first endpoint (ie your VPN).

So wait, does that means you get lower pings using vnp? Wow!

I wrote a much longer response but yeah, it’s your routing. I live in Southern California and AT&T fiber will randomly have severe latency and packet lost (not to GeForce now, but to major CDNs and just other parts of the internet). Every time it happens, I can just connect to a VPN (since most providers have servers in LA or San Diego) and bam, all of my problems disappear.

If you’re getting lower latency and a smoother experience on your VPN, it just means you have a more direct route or less saturated route that way.

u/TheRealMrMaloonigan No, it’s the latency from the device to the GFN endpoint. Using a VPN doesn’t “hide” the latency from the local device to the VPN endpoint.

I doubt it. Some VPN might have better routing than your ISPs so this is possible.

This is incorrect, don’t give false information any more upvotes
The latency you see in the app is Device->GFN Server, the GFN app has no way of knowing the latency from VPN to GFN server because the packets don’t stop there, the connection is from device to server, so here the VPN is really helping them get a better latency and this is common when ISPs have a shit routing for your traffic, the VPN helps you get a better route to the server

It’s possible but not certain

worth a shot I guess, Ill try it
