Does anyone know if the TP-Link / Deco VPN client configuration allows for selecting specific devices to be on the VPN when activated?
My current setup:
ISP > ISP hardware (simplifying it) > Asus BQ16 Pro router > Paid VPN service (Wireguard)
Currently I set up my Asus router to integrate paid vpn service’s wireguard config to the router using ‘VPN Fusion’ (it’s just another VPN Client set up).
What I like about this VPN fusion is that I can configure it to apply to two specific devices (Apple TV clients) and the rest of the devices are not on the VPN.
So after configuring my router to use Wireguard config from my paid VPN service, and when it is activated, I have:
-
Devices that connect to my main wifi network from ISP
-
Two devices on the Wireguard VPN
I am now exploring other Routers or Mesh network (preferably wifi 7 based) and I can’t seem to find out if the TP-Link’s or Deco’s VPN client config allows me to specify which devices should be connected to the VPN network I am setting up. Most youtube videos do not describe the ‘admin’ side of the router config.
I’m considering these two products
So, if anyone is using either of the above, and has configured VPN client, can you advise if I can limit the VPN to specific devices?
The Decos with VPN feature allow you to set everyone, or a client list, so yes. See How to Set Up WireGuard VPN Client on the Deco App | TP-Link
Deco software and firmware are ASS and do NOT allow you to do what you can easily do with the Asus Router.
Why would you want a major DOWNGRADE to Deco from the BQ16?
The easiest setup is to buy 2 different routers, have a VPN on one, and give it it’s own SSID that designates it as the VPN router in the SSID name. Have your clients connect to the appropriate router.
Hi, I’m thinking of getting into the deco ecosystem.
Do I need the monthly subscription to be able to set up a vpn on the router level?

Phew, that’s good to know.

I don’t really know much about Deco’s firmware / admin capabilities. Hence the question.
I’m about to switch to another ISP plan and they have the two devices as an option, so I wanted to know what’s the firmware’s / administrative capabilities when it comes to VPN config.
Currently happy with the BQ16 pro… while it can do what I want it to do, there are some quirks to it as well. For example, if I set up first wireguard to location A, and then I set up another wireguard to location B as secondary, I cannot set B’s location to limit to two devices.
I wonder if Netgear’s would be worse than Deco’s…

Not ideal at all.
Asus BQ16 that I am using can intelligently partition the vpn traffic by specifying which device I want to be on the VPN. No need to get a 2nd router for that.
I just wanted to know if Tplink / deco software is sophisticated enough to do this, it looks like it cannot do this.
Nope. It’s a built in feature.
both netgear and tp link have inferior software and firmware, and without question, ASUS handles VPN integration into their routers a 1000 times better than either of those other two low end providers
