I use OpenVPN Connect on my Android Phone and Windows machines. It works well, but I really would love the ability to split tunnel so that I can view cameras in my local network and a remote network all at once. I don’t believe that OpenVPN Connect has this option (or if it does, I can’t find it) and I was hoping to get a recommendation on what other, free VPN software like OpenVPN Connect would split tunnel for me and still use the .ovpn file type.
If you are open to alternatives which do not use the .ovpn file type I am happy to share.
Thanks. I think my biggest issue is that the profiles I create from my Asus and TPLink routers only allow LAN or LAN+WAN access, I can’t seem to split tunnel when I’m using those profiles.
Unfortunately my router has the Openvpn file type so I’m kind of stuck, but curious to hear what your alternatives are…
For example, OpenZiti - OpenZiti · GitHub. It is split tunnel by default as it implements zero trust networking principles (though you can set it up to do macro intercepts).
OpenZiti is an open source zero trust network overlay which is inherently split tunnel (I work on it). You also have open source Wireguard which can do split tunnel, and commercial implementations such as Tailscale. You then have other ZTNs which also do split tunnel such as Twingate.
I tried Tailscale and it didn’t work great since I had to setup different subnets for each site and configure subroutes, exit nodes, etc
I’ll look into OpenZiti.
Is there no way to do a split tunnel with OpenVPN? Seems like such a simple thing to accomplish in 2024
TBH I dont know, its one tech I have not looked into in a long time.
I actually went ahead and used the built in windows 10 VPN option, seems to work well for my needs.
