Voron at school

My robotics team got a voron but since it is connected to school wifi, some sites are blocked, is there a way to install a vpn?

I assume you’re only doing updates or installing github stuff? Consider wifi hotspot from from a phone, data usage would be minimal.

This is not a 3d printer question, this is a school WiFi/network/sys admin question.

And in general, bypassing school WiFi site blockers is not something any sanctioned and funded school team should do without permission.

Do you have a phone ? Share WiFi with the printer and use your own cellular connection.

Shadow IT is the quickest way to get something confiscated by IT.

What are you trying to access on the printer itself anyway? Everything should be local other than GitHub access for updates.

Talk to your robotics team’s sponsor about it.

Most schools would block common vpn ports/sites. I would go with a hotspot. It shouldn’t need updates too regularly

Can’t you run the printer offline with an SD card to upload files?

That’s a security risk to remove the block and is most likely the reason it won’t be removed. If it’s a public school you’re going to be limited to a policy that’s enforced across many schools.

First thing printed will be a big dong if things are unlocked lol

Git makes stuff easier but you can download the packages and load them manually.

what can’t you access?

all your printer should need is just an internal network and an accessible IP address.

i wouldn’t recommend going around school IT especially if you’re asking these questions but if you need to install stuff on your pi that’s blocked then ask IT or just have someone take it home and run the updates there then bring it back

What sites does your 3D printer need to access that are blocked by the school wifi?

I’ve run mine of my phones hotspot to upload files, not particularly cost effective though

Get a small travel router with WiFi. Set it up so that the Voron and your computer can connect to it as an isolated network. That’s the safest way to do it. If you can afford a 4g hotspot maybe you can have it connected to the internet during meetings but it’s not necessary.

We have already tried to talk to admins but they won’t do anything

You could connect it directly to your laptop with a crossover cable (is that still a thing?)

Edit: Lol. Downvoted for mentioning a crossover cable or suggesting bypassing security?

Kids need permission, challenge accepted lol

Connect your raspi for updates with your cellphone.

Why would be you shocked ? Github is the easiest way to distribute something one is not supposed to
