Just seeing if I would have success using one for small amounts of torrent/P2P traffic for things not on Usenet. I suspect that the answer is to spend a little bit extra monthly to get a highly rated independent provider, but maybe there are some nice, surprising included offers out there.
I have lots of experience with UNE’s VPN service.
NA speeds on the bigger servers are OK at best. Torrenting is a no-go on US servers, period. They will disable your account. Many core servers simply don’t connect at all (e.g. Netherlands). Once upon a time I made regular use of the service but I only use it now to circumvent the odd geolocked web video and even then it doesn’t work half the time (e.g. 10play (Australia) and Sky Sports (UK)).
UNE’s core usenet service is great but don’t bother signing up expecting the VPN to be any good.
Depends on the vpn provider and if theyve been audited on there non logging and if they use ssd or drives… Basicly a vpn isnt a vpn. There is a wide range of difference s … Check the /r vpn. They got a nice list of privacy concerns …
It seems like Privado VPN is the one bundled with all the Highwinds providers. I’ve not been impresses - seems like a teaser to get you to pay for an upgrade. I don’t use it and have a separate VPN provider.
I suggest looking at windscribe’s “build your own plan” option which lets you choose one specific country server(I suggest Netherlands) for $1 which along with $1 unlimited traffic comes out to be around $2 per month billing(pay by the month). If it works fine for you then keep paying $2 every month or stop it to look at other options.
A few years ago, I tried the VPN which is free with Newsdemon. It is operated by a separate company. They limit Newsdemon users to a small subset of their servers. It was not reliable - frequent dropouts and slow connections
As a Usenet provider, Newsdemon is great
But the add-on “free VPN” does not add any value
I wouldn’t waste your money getting a(n) (more) expensive VPN for downloading on Usenet. Most (all?) (decent) Usenet providers provide SSL connections, so you won’t need a VPN.
I use NGD and have an included VPN sub from them through GhostPath, it was a combo deal a couple years back. I use the transmission-vpn docker image and just plug in my GhostPath credentials and it generally works fine. I’m only using it strictly for that docker image though, but I’ve been using it 2-3+ years on public trackers without issues.
Occasionally, I’ll have to switch the server that’s in use because it will go down for maintenance or something and the docker will end up in a unhealthy loop because it won’t start transmission if the configured VPN doesn’t come up first, but overall it’s been a great value for a throw-in add-on to a sub I’m already getting stupid cheap.
The one with newshosting is a vpn in Switzerland
Also have privado here with UNS subscription, works great for torrents
I used privado occasionally when I had a newshosting account. It’s slow, but functional. I certainly wouldn’t want to use it for all my internet traffic, but it was better than I expected for $0.
+1 Mullvad. I use a dedicated download box. Consistent speeds.
Some of the smaller resellers just say VPN provided, so it is helpful to know it is likely Privado for Highwinds.
This sounds like a great way to wait until I find a good deal. Thanks!
I use it for the exact same purpose. Apparently ghost path supports port forwarding for p2p but ive never been able to get it to work, out of curiosity do you use it with a forwarded port or just as is?
Being it’s included… Agreed… Not bad… Not the fastest speeds though if you’re looking for higher than 160 Mbps… Tech Radar had a review on it about a month ago too…
I don’t recommend their app… Just use the OpenVPN profiles and I’ve had really good luck with them…
Why would you use a VPN for downloading with a Usenet provider? Most decent Usenet providers provide SSL…
Same but with AirVPN.
Mullvad would be my go to if they weren’t around and I didn’t get in on 5 yrs of service on a BF/CM re-up deal a few years back. However, service via Air has been reliable and you notice how much either company spends on advertising? Seems like R&D is more of a priority w both.
I also have never gotten the port forwarding to work consistently. My downloads generally complete, and I can then seed back to those established connections but seeding after that doesn’t really work because of the closed port.
I don’t feel too bad about it, except for super-old torrents with basically no other downloaders, my ratio is always +5 or better just from the above. It would be nice if i could seed properly, but I haven’t been able to track down where in the Ghostpath > VPN > Docker > Transmission path the issue lies.
Great question! One, I’m paranoid as it is haha. Two, It’s a download server. I don’t specifically use it just for usenet. But it’s also more of a peace of mind thing also.
