I’m looking for a fast router or a WiFi router that would offer the highest speed with WireGuard VPN. I tested GL.iNet AXT1800 (Slate AX), a very good WiFi router, which achieved a fantastic speed of 550/45Mbps (ISP 600/50 Mbps) on my phone with VPN turned on, in close proximity to the router via WiFi. Unfortunately, the Ethernet connection that I need, possibly due to the age of my laptop with a 1Gbps card, only achieved a speed of about 9 Mbps…
It might be helpful for the community to share data on the speeds of different devices achieved when using the WireGuard protocol, which I encourage everyone to do.

What was the negotiated link speed between your router and laptop? 9mbps makes me think if the cable or the ports were bad and it only negotiated a 10mbps link.
If possible, Try with some other cable and try with another port on your router. There is no other reasonable explanation for it dropping from ~550mbps on a client on wifi to 10mbps on a client connected using ethernet.
Furthermore(Your post is confusing me a little bit), Are you creating the tunnel on the router or on your client devices? (laptop/phone) If you are using wireguard on your phone, then you don’t need a “special” router for faster wireguard performance, You only need a router that can perform at the speeds you want. To router, Wireguard is udp traffic and there is nothing special in it.
Super old post, but I have the same question right now.
To clarify based on questions in the thread, I am looking to have the router create the WG tunnel so that anything plugged into it would not require its own WG setup (e.g. a TV or Roku that obviously don’t have client apps).
Since my primary use is over ethernet, the wifi speed isn’t so important but it’ll probably come hand in hand with a faster router.
I’ve used ASUS in the past and it’s too old to run the latest firmware with the wireguard option built right in there. I can flash the router if needed, but am totally happy to go with out of the box options if they’re out there.
I was thinking that there’s actually no point to find a fast router because your uplink is only 50Mbps, hence your VPN speeds are limited by your uplink speed (unless you’re not accessing your VPN from Internet).
As per suggested by another user, it is probably a connection issue for the 9Mbps issue. You might want to consider trying another router.
I’m running on a very basic Barracuda F280 with 2GB of ram and a very old 5400rpm harddisk. My internet is 100/50Mbps and my VPN speeds are severely limited by my slow uplink speed, so I only get about 30-40Mbps from outside.
I was wondering though, you shouldn’t test your VPN by connecting to your home network (since you get 550/45), that makes no sense. You should actually test using your phone data or other internet, which would give you a download speed/upload speed of less than 50Mbps.
edit:I failed to mention I received the speeds over ethernet not Wi-Fi. Even the makers say you should use your own access point if your wireless for this router and let it handle the encryption and decryption part.
I use the Vilfo VPN router with a 1 Gbit internet connection
The highest speed on Wireguard with surfshark I’ve been able to achieve in real world torrent speeds is 85.52MB/s
(Yes, megabytes) through Maryland to Ashburn, Virginia VPN server (data converter app says that 717 “Mbps” )
Vilfo AB claim a max speed of 1 Gbps is possible on Wireguard though after several simultaneous downloads finishing too fast, I got tired of trying to reach this maximum so I don’t know how high it can actually go
Also let me know if you want my full review of it

This situation is very strange to me…
I have a computer with Windows 8.1 operating system with a 1Gb/s network card „Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection”.
Previously, I used a old router D-LINK DIR-615 with a throughput of 100 Mb/s, on which I obtained an internet speed via Ethernet of around 90 Mb/s down and 53 Mb/s up.
In the Ethernet connection properties, the data transmission speed is displayed as 10 Mb/s while using the router GL-AXT1800, while with the old router in the same location, I had information about a 100Mb/s connection while using the router D-LINK DIR-615.
To eliminate any potential cable damage risks. I connected the cable modem to the router using a new 50cm CAT. 6 patch cord (WAN) and I connected the router to my laptop using a new 50cm CAT. 6 patch cord (LAN1). I also changed the LAN ports on the router, although there wasn’t much choice as it only has 2 LAN and 1 WAN port.
