Thank you all for not being this dumb

It’s not a VPN, it’s a proxy. In other words, it doesn’t encrypt the data.

Well, only Opera browsers let you select a custom location for free

It doesn’t matter if it is a VPN or a proxy, it’s the only browser that allows you to roughly select a location to unblock geo locked contents for free out of the box

But Opera VPN is ridiculously slow, I would not recommend it unless it is some 5 minute testing sessions, a VPN extension is a lot better

It’s Opera VPN. Running on Opera servers. With Opera’s sketchy data handling policies. :man_facepalming::man_facepalming::man_facepalming:

You’d be surprised, Ive seen some dumb takes on here

Pawxy for android is a great option. Check it out

I’ve seen more superior firefox proxy addons that does what opera do and I used it even before opera gx is born

Opera fanboys are fucking dorks

Just use Proton or Orbot

I feel bad for you being happy in the ignorance

I’m confused. Are you saying that people that claim Opera GX is the best bc of a built in VPN are dumb or are you actually saying so yourself?

Either way, there’s a couple things to consider as possibly confusing things.

A) I don’t use Opera products for the simple fact that I’m overwhelmed with the number of browsers in use as it is (it’s honestly out of control), so I’ve not used OperaGX but I assume it’s an Android app/browser? If so, the fact that it’s a proxy and not a VPN doesn’t matter on Android, it’s going to use the system’s VPN slot regardless. It’s just how Android works, anything that funnels web traffic must use the VPN slot to do so and therefore the little VPN icon (skeleton key) is displayed, making it appear as a VPN to a less informed user.

B) IIRC, Opera for desktop does include an honest to goodness VPN

So, “dumb” might be a bit harsh. “Unobservant” all day, for sure though.

Edit - in the event that it’s an iOS app, I don’t know for sure because I use Android (4 life) but wouldn’t be surprised if iOS has the same basic setup for funneling web traffic and the way it occupies the VPN slot/is displayed to the user

Give credit where credit is due. This may come in handy and they give it for free. But… nothing is ever actually free… So, do with that what you will.

yeah, I use Opera, and Firefox… the VPN of Opera is nice when I do some BS like “hey youtube I swear Im in this 1 place that legally wont let you show me ads! just ignore the fact that I moved here the moment you disabled my adblocker…” but otherwise it isn’t needed

Also, it’s a proxy, not a VPN.

Yes I know that, I am just using the official name, I did mention “It doesn’t matter if it is a VPN or a proxy”

It’s a feature that lets you (really roughly) change your location and ip

But I would generally stay away from Free VPNs, both privacy concerns and speed problems
That is why I would not recommend Opera VPN unless you need to do something for 5 minutes that does not matter if someone sees it, and for some reason you can’t do it in your home network

Nah bro… It’s not even close. Opera is extremely ‘opaque’ about their policies.

hell nah opera fanboy

No, Opera’s is way more shitty. That’s not to say Chrome’s and Edge’s aren’t too. Use something like Librewolf or just Hardended Firefox

Used Google to beat the Google lol

Iran, Turkmenistan, lybia, North Korea, China, and that’s just the quick ones lol
