I have never used a VPN and wanted to try one out so I’m sorry if I’m not using the correct terminology.
I use Proton VPN with my IPTV service because supposedly it’s more stable with a VPN.
My IPTV completely froze so I checked my speed and I was only getting 1 MBPS. I checked my phone and the same WIFI I’m getting 650 MBPS. I turned off the VPN and then checked my speed and I got 150 MBPS (which is what I usually get) and my IPTV works fine.
What would cause this? I’m assuming the server I was connected to was bogged down. If this happens in the future, do I just disconnect and reconnect to a different server?
Some servers are slow others fast, first try the function connect to fastest server, sometimes it is not, then you need to look manually for the country (which should be your own if you want fast speed) and try different servers. I have proton unlimited, on my pc i often only get 5-7mb download but i have 10 with the fastest server i have stable 10mb, weird but somehow it can help keep it more stable.
Depends mostly on the server you connect to, the country of the server, your location, the protocol you use etc.
I‘m currently in Switzerland. With the servers in Switzerland, Germany or Luxembourg I get around 95% of the speed I have without the VPN. If I connect to e.g. New Zealand my speed is significantly lower since the signal needs to travel through half the globe to reach my device. In my experience using Wireguard is most of the times noticeable faster than e.g. OpenVPN protocol etc.
I would recommend trying different servers in your home country or if there are none in your country some of the countries around you and trying different protocols.
I’m connected to a Switzerland server, but I’m getting about 0.5 mbps. In fact, I’ve gotten this speed for the 5 servers I’ve tried. Could my ISP be throttling my VPN connection?
