Sudden Issues with Mullvad - “Unable to apply firewall rules”
I am hoping you guys might be able to help me figure this out. Tonight suddenly mullvad started giving me this message after several connectivity issues with my wifi (thats another issue, but never caused this before… upgrading to mesh in a couple days). My wifi connection is now good, and I have internet when not using mullvad, but mullvad keeps giving me this message and will not connect, blocking internet until I hit cancel. I have tried disabling my antivirus (avast) and windows firewall, neither helped. Went in and flushed/reset my DNS. Still ongoing. Restarted computer, uninstalled/reinstalled Mullvad. I have run out of ideas and have no idea what might be the root of this issue.
Mullvad has this in their FAQ:
App under Windows says: failed to apply firewall rules…?
This mostly happens with third party security and firewall software that blocks WFP from working correctly. The error will often show up in the daemon.log as : [talpid_core::winnet][ERROR] Initiate WFP transaction: The call timed out while waiting to acquire the transaction lock.

In my case, I uninstalled Avast. It is not that I trully needed it anyways. There is windows defender, and Mullvad has its own protection as well. Perhaps I should try another antivirus. In the end it was the third-party (sneaky) antivirus (probably has it like that so we purchase their VPN, they also have a specific article Avast VPn VS Mullvad which appeared while I was looking for a solution to my error).
This post/comment has been removed in response to Reddit’s aggressive new API policy and the Admin’s response and hostility to Moderators and the Reddit community as a whole. Reddit admin’s (especially the CEO’s) handling of the situation has been absolutely deplorable. Reddit users made this platform what it is, creating engaging communities and providing years of moderation for free. 3rd party apps existed before the official app which helped make Reddit more accessible for many. This is the thanks we get. The Admins are not even willing to work with app developers or moderators. Instead its “my way or the highway”, so many of us have chosen the highway. Farewell Reddit, Federated platforms are my new home (Lemmy and Mastodon).
Good to know, that’s what their customer service recommended trying. I will give it a go
sadly nope, mullvad is the only vpn I have installed. This is really strange. About fifteen minutes ago it worked again for reasons unknown to me, and now its again not working after a reboot.
I think at this point I’ve just about tried every single server they have in every country. This is really strange.
