Spectrum Nightmare please help

Have my slate as server to spectrum router > beryl ax for my travel router and ethernet to work pc. Have been using setup for about 2 months now and everything has been fine until past week when it seems at a certain hour (5-6pm est) my latency shoots up to 240+ and my dl and up speeds take a huge hit not even pulling 1mb from up. Next day will be fine again then at 6pm boom everything comes to a halt. I have tried doing ping tests to find my best ping (1340) and have upgraded isp to 1gb down and 35 up. This issue just started this week but has been persisting and work is quickly getting agitated rightfully so. I can not put my thumb on issue outside of this being peak time for spectrum in my area and somehow im getting affected by it. Is there anything else it could be or something with spectrum in general that anybody has experienced something similar. Need help before im booking a flight home in next few days to go do troubleshooting…Thanks

I have several customers using dual-router VPN setups on Spectrum and the issue is that they cycle the IP nearly daily, which causes up to a 10 minute lag in your DDNS url being updated.

For these customers I’ve solved for it using 2 things:

  1. hacking the Slate (server) DDNS client to update every 1 minute (instead of the 10 min default)
  2. having the Slate server reboot itself nightly at convenient hours (e.g. 4am) so it cycles the daily IP on a schedule that is more controllable instead of at a random time.

Hm interesting I could look into these and see if they will work. All has been good for 2+ months then this issue started just this week and has been persisting. These are two new solutions I will look into i appreciate it they seem easily doable. I’ve been wondering if they are throttling the port even though they deny they throttle at all. I’ve heard nothing but bad things about spectrum and VPN setups… if these steps do not work then I will be switching to the only other isp in my area att and see if they are better. I appreciate the tips if they work I’ll report back

I have been seeing the same ip on spectrum - nyc for atleast over a year. Not sure if the practice is location dependent but they have not changed my ip. I have pfsense setup which sends a notification if ip changes and the ipv4 ans ipv6 had not changed

Another common issue is MTU settings (based on the ISP you’re connecting from), but they normally are persistent issues, not intermittent like you’re describing. You can try adjusting down the MTU on your Wireguard client config to 1320 and see if that makes things better, but I don’t think it’s your problem.

If you suspect they might be throttling at times of network congestion then you could try running WG on a different port, but that will include having to set up additional port forwarding on your ISP router to your Slate. When ISPs use QoS or throttling it’s normally on a port basis.

The other thing to consider is the client-side network you’re connecting from. It’s possible they could be implementing some QoS at peak traffic hours. Easiest way to test would be to find another network to connect from (e.g. coffee shop) during those hours and see if you still have the issue.

Interesting. On the clients I have it changes nearly every time we power cycle the router.

For OP, you should check if yours does the same. If not, then obviously it’s not the cause of your issue and more likely something to do with throttling or QoS on one end of the connection.

PS. The other method I’ve had success with to get around ISP throttling or VPN blocks is to use Shadowsocks over TCP instead of Wireguard… but it’s a lot more complicated to get running securely using stock GL devices.

yes I went one by one testing MTU all the way to 1200 and did not change anything. Problem is deffiantly dependent on time now its the morning and my latency is back at 180-190 compared to the 250+ it shoots to at 6pm. I never thought about the Qos , I do have an additonal network I will try from to rule that out thats a good one. I will also have to look into the shadowsocks , im wondering if I was just better off going with a raspberry pi server instead of going GL. If all these fails I’ll be booking a flight to go switch the ISP fun games …
