Slow Speeds with Proton Unlimited & OpenVPN Router

I recently set up Proton Unlimited through the OpenVPN client configuration on my FreshTomato router software. When I am connected to VPN, my speeds max out at 50 Mbps. With VPN disabled, I can easily get up to 250 Mbps. While I would expect some speed loss, it seems a bit excessive.

I have tried different configurations (i.e. different servers, Secure Core, with and without ad blocking, TLS channel security, etc.) but it does not improve my speed at all. In fact, when I configure as described in Proton’s guide, I cannot connect to VPN at all.

I’ve done a lot of searching but haven’t found a solution or answer yet. Has anyone here experienced this problem? Is there something in my configuration that is wrong or not optimal? I have attached screenshots of my configuration.

I also had poor speeds and I tried all sorts of different configs. I ended up going elsewhere. But don’t worry, some very help people will come along soon to tell you Proton is blazing fast and you’re the issue.

Ah, glad to hear I am not the only one. What service did you end up going with?

Thanks for the advice! I checked my router CPU load and during large file transfer it varies between 40-50% usage. So I don’t think that’s too high, but I could be wrong.

I also did some testing, and connecting to the same VPN servers on Proton iOS app I can get better speeds.

I’ll have to look into it some more. Thanks for the tips though.
