Currently have been using Mullvad for less than two months. I’ve seen that there’s currently a 70% off deal for Proton VPN plus 12-month plan which from what I understand is paying $35.88 + tax upfront. Seems cheaper than paying $5 a month for 12 months for Mullvad. Is it worth switching just for this reason? Also can I get the same deal next year? I would mainly be using it on Linux, MacOS and iOS. Maybe some streaming. Any major differences should I also be aware of? Also thinking about trying out Proton Mail as well if that’s important also with Black Friday deal. Thanks in advance.
It really depends on your use case, one reason I prefer Proton VPN is because of port forwarding and the 10 VPN slots, instead of Mullvad’s 5. If you pay with crypto you can get Mullvad for $4 a month by the way.
If I were you I would grab the Proton VPN deal just to try it out on different OS’es. If you don’t like it, they have a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can switch back to Mullvad.
I switched to proton from mullvad. It’s been great.
I switched from Mulvad because I found Mulvad just a bad service. I constantly lost connection, got blocked by some services due to blacklisted IP addresses, I kind of regret trying Mulvad at all.
I used to use Mullvad and I recall being blocked from websites few and far between. I haven’t really experienced that with Proton.
I use it on my MX Linux Chromebook and it works. Just don’t expect a nice intuitive interface. But it does do what it’s supposed to do.
It does not renew at the same price, I would go for the 24 month plan to keep it for longer.
Pcmag has 2 year BF deal for $2.49/month

In using proton suite of apps, I’ve been very very very impressed. Proton Pass still will not replace 1Password but to have a secondary account where I can add things to is awesome. The extra storage you get with the encrypted drive is awesome which means you can back up your photos from either iOS or android to the secure cloud hard drive.
I just switched to this deal. Great purchase. Proton has been working great for me here in the USA. I was on the $9.99 a month plan to try it out.
Have you pre paid Mullvad for 12 months or are you paying monthly?
Linux I hear is very problematic on the whole Proton Suite. There will be BF 2025.
if you need/use IPV6, on windows or Android, forget about Proton, they haven’t implemented full coverage for it, and they delete posts that address it
Mullivad and IVPN are 2 of the companies that do, and do it well
Mullvad is quite buggy lately, and what advantage could it have over our beloved Proton products?
After all, Proton is the greatest company in the world (well, behind Apple anyways, and yes Tim Apple should be named God-Emperor of the world, perhaps even our galaxy).
When you use Proton, you are experiencing all the benefits of Heaven while on Earth. The first time you connect with ProtonVPN, you actually hear the strumming of a harp, and angelic singing.
Mullvad is all fire, uncomfortable heat and the odour of sulphur. Plus, you do not hear chubby cherubs, but screeching demonic entities.
Thus, choose wisely.
Good advice. Or, dude could do what I do sometimes, and run them both (obviously not at the same time.) It’s kind of a pain in the ass, but I feel as if it gives prying eyes different looks and obstacles. Whichever I decide to use when I boot up, my internet connection isn’t ever accessible without going through one of them.
Personally, I still feel like Mullvad is the top of the list at privacy.
Would you happen to know if either of the two support shadowsocks on iOS?
Thanks but unfortunately it doesn’t work if you are a current subscriber
It seems only Mullvad offers Shadowsocks, but not on iOS.
I was a current subscriber and I just bought 2 years for $59.76 anyway
How did get your deal?
Well, by now I do not remember exactly, but it was something straightforward.
I think I just login to my ProtonVPN account, then opened the url with the discount code. Or maybe I just entered the discount code (BF2024PCMAG) from the URL into the discount field on the “payment” page.
But nothing fancy, for sure.
And, yes, I do not regret switching from WIndscribe to ProtonVPN (as a side note). It is much more stable on both Windows and Android.
