Should I Disable Windows Defender If i'm using Norton Antivirus?

I use Bitdefender because I don’t trust MS to keep me safe. The UI is also much more pleasant.

Microsoft configured Windows Defender to turn itself off as not to cause any conflicts when another antivirus is registered in Windows Security.

Yes, don’t have two tools scanning all your files constantly and trying to see if you have some malware or viruses and. honestly I would use defender. I I’ve used AV. G. I’ve used Norton. I’ve used a cafe. They all suck compared to just Windows defender. They all slow the computer down way too much

Norton? That’s literally the worst antivirus. You wouldn’t lose anything if you uninstall it. At least use Avast. For my needs it worked ok for one year. You want way more better? Use Bitdefender or Malwarebytes with Windows Defender

It will automatically disable real time protection, but it still has an option for “periodic scanning” where windows defender will periodically scan when a third party one is installed, but windows defender won’t be the real time one.

Well I got a year subscription for it for like 5 bucks and liked how it included a password manager, VPN, Cloud backup storage… thought i couldn’t go wrong but as the looks of it i should just use windows defender and just use my browser as a password manager then?

add the malwarebytes extension as well and you’re chilling for life

Bit defender is also not needed just like norton. Stick with Windows defender and uBlockOrigin. They literally use the virus databases anyhow

Does the free version of Bitdefender still force a MITM SSL cert on you?

Literally all those are closed source and you are putting all your eggs in basket.

For password manager dashlane and bitwarden are best options.

For Vpn use mulvad and for cloud backup you could use onedrive as that’s built in. If you need something more secure, r/pirvacyguides has other options.

the only reason it includes a password manager is that in 1 year when all your passwords are in it, you will be too lazy to export them elsewhere so you’ll continue to give them your money each year, but full price.

and then they got you.

Im just going to throw my vote for 1password as password manager.

The extention is not needed, nor does it provide any additional feature to ublock origin. I know many people would have problems with YouTube videos and turns out that they have multiple addons that do similar things.

The problem is that Windows update has a long history of breaking things. I just don’t feel comfortable relying on MS for something so vital. Also, the periodic scanning was pissing me off. I simply disabled Windows Defender in group policies and called it a day.

“Free version”? I have no idea.

It’s free because you are the product.

She’s gotta feed the monkey.
I mean…

Hasn’t that ever
occurred to you, man?

Sounds like something was not setup correctly when installing or some software messed something up. I have been using Windows defender since 2016 and never once had an issue with scanning or anything like you had.

Actually, periodic scanning is automatically enabled when a 3rd party anti-virus program is installed.

I get that Windows Defender is pretty good. I’ve just been burned by MS in the past too much.
