My goal is to be able to use my synology NAS at home as a vpn server to browse the internet while am outside the house with my home IP address.
I do not want to just use a regular vpn eg nord / torguard etc.
i have tried to set up the synology vpn app, and done the portforwarding on my router at home. But unfortunately, it seems I cannot connect to the vpn using my phone.
What am i doing wrong here ?
i’ve left most fields default, i’ve set auth to chap-v2 and typed in a random key
entered my home ip, saved it and tried to connect but it just fails without any error message after a few seconds.
Your WAN ip address on your router? See below before moving forward

Did you verify you have a routable public ip address on your internet router? With a client sitting behind your router go to https://www.whatsmyip.org/ and note the ip address. Then log into your internet router and look at the WAN ip address. Do they match? No? Then either you have another router on your network or your ISP is doing CGNAT
OP I would recommend you check out tailscale. VPN made simple
If you do decide to go this route make sure you read the link from top to bottom and do all the tweaks
Hey OP, not sure what the end goal is but I would not recommend using your data storage device as a VPN server to route your internet traffic through. You may be able to set it up but it doesn’t make it secure nor practical, especially with port forwarding from a regular ISP router.
I highly recommend a separate device to be used for this purpose that is made to be a router. You have several options to choose from but I suggest something like the Ubiquiti Unifi routers that offer a very easy to use software to achieve what you are doing but given your ambition here you should probably explore OPNsense instead. It is just far more secure to connect to your router via Wireguard to access your home network and browse the internet through that instead of exposing your NAS to the internet.
Glad to hear you tried that out. The endless headaches of running OpenVPN von my Synology Router are really not worth it compared to the breeze and ease of tailscale.
