QVPN Client - How to confirm that your NAS is using the VPN?

Hey all I’ve got my QVPN client setup (i think?) and wanted to know if there’s a good way to confirm that in fact it’s actually using the VPN connection (e.g. when pulling down torrents)?

Unrelated to that, I’m also wondering if the “Tx” and “Rx” rates that are displayed are over what time period? Is that aggregate since the VPN connect was established for example?

I’d SSH in to the NAS and do a traceroute anywhere outside. Basically, the next hop should be the VPN provider’s servers.

Open up Browser Station and surf to ‘whatismyip’. The VPN client will also show your external IP. I use the VPN as the DG for my Q.

If you’re going to torrent a lot and want a dedicated VPN, I would suggest building an always on VPN torrent box with a Raspberry Pi. That lets me control the iptables and ensure that when the VPN drops, nothing leaks out.

Please don’t use it. Highly unreliable. I gave up and went with a WireGuard on a cheap RaspberryPi4.

“Tx” and “Rx”

transmitting, receiving

good point. i see 10.7.1.1 and then 107.181.166.221 as my next hops. neither of which are my provider’s public address. so i guess it’s working. Odd that when i was pulling down a torrent, the “Rx” value under QVPN only shows a fraction of the data volume that i actually downloaded. So that’s throwing me off.

He’s talking about client side VPN, not server.

I’ve had no troubles with qvpn server but only use it for remote admin.

interesting comment. why do you say it’s unreliable?

I’ve generally grown very weary of any of the QNAP apps and services. Disabled everything and using it as a “dumb” NAS.

My comment specifically was meant towards a VPN server setup and not client. I needed VPN server setup so I could log into my home network (while being remote) for admin tasks.
VPN connected on sporadic occasions only.
With so many security incidents related to QNAP, I’ve disabled all services and port forwards to the QNAP unit to secure it.

ah…

I mostly use it as an NVR, plex server, and CIFS share. Mine is pretty old. 8 disks so probably not light on power use. I’ve thought about using a Pi or Nvidia shield for the CIFS / plex server stuff, and an nvidia nano + shinobi for NVR. But that’d cost $$. certainly more then i’d save in power use. So…
