Hey everyone! Just a quick disclaimer, I am not all savvy with this stuff so thanks for bearing with me lol. My current VPN isn’t supported by my modem/router combo so I need to get a second router. My question is because I’m running two routers, will that slow down internet speeds or am I just better running a new modem as well? And also, when I set up the VPN through the second router that is physically connected to the modem, does said VPN apply to all devices that are connected throughout the house via Ethernet cable or only devices that are connected to Wi-Fi? Thanks again in advance!
I use VPN on my laptops/PCs and on my Amazon Fire TV Sticks.
Several of those use their VPN to different countries.
If I’d have one VPN on the router and then change country, everybody would get interrupted!
will that slow down internet speeds
The second router will probably not lower your bandwidth as much as the VPN will. When not using the VPN, if your second router meets your paid for bandwidth, you will experience a slight increase in latency. This may cause a gaming issue, if you are already close to the latency limit.

Depending on the capabilities of the router, the VPN will likely apply to everything connected to that router, wired and WiFi. Devices connected to the other modem/router will not traverse the VPN.
The popular way to handle this, is to put the modem/router combo into bridge mode. This effectively eliminates the router function making it a modem.
am I just better running a new modem
That depends. If you are paying a monthly fee for the ISP’s modem, you could save on the monthly bill with your own modem. The break-even point is usually about a year, but depends on the monthly charges. The downside: It will always be your problem when you contact the ISP’s help desk, until you prove it is not.
Okay thanks for the info, that helped a bunch! So just to confirm, if I put the modem into bridge mode, connect the second router then the vpn will apply to all devices both wired and wireless as long as the router’s capabilities allow it?
