Hi everyone, I have a shot question regarding multiple clients for a company VPN. Given the example that a company give me a Windows laptop with a VPN client installed and configured to work from home most of the time. But at Home I have a Mac Book Pro which outperforms the Windows Laptop and I’m more used to that. So if I copy the VPN configuration file to my Mac Book and use the client there, would it be possible for the company to recognize that? Is there any hardware-id sent or anything else which let the company know which hardware is connecting into the VPN?
Instead of circumventing your company’s IT team, reach out to them and ask if this is allowable. They might have policies in place that we cannot help you navigate and that might be a factor as to why they won’t let you do what you’re asking. You must remember that we live in a digital age and any device you connect to your company’s network must be accounted for otherwise you are at risk of losing your job over something that is ultimately trivial. Best of luck to you.
100% what shatteredfriend7 said. Yes, if you connect the MacBook to the VPN then absolutely the VPN server will be able to tell what type of computer is connecting to it. For both OpenVPN and Wireguard, the computer name is often recorded by the VPN server, as well as the OS and version… not to mention the username that logs in with it.
I understand why you would be hesitant to ask about using your Macbook since most people’s minds will go to thinking about the chance they will force you to install things you don’t want + the worry that it will enable them to track what you are doing on your personal machine. Reasonable paranoia, but not always true.
Still, talking with I.T. is best because they can tell you a) if it’s allowed, b) what’s required if it is, and c) if you have to install things, what they are and what they do.
Yes, the credentials I have to enter each time when I connect, that is clear. It won’t be a custom VPN Software, it will something in the wild like OpenVPN or so. The question is still if they can find out that I use another computer to connect.
