Private relay disrupts internet connection

Hi,
I am using a M2 Air and suddenly noticed that I couldn’t load any pages in safari and in Firefox. I was connected to my home WiFi, and all other devices (including my iPhone, which also uses private relay) didn’t have any issues.
When I tried troubleshooting, it appeared to be iCloud private relay causing the issue. Once I disabled it, I could load pages just fine.
Is this a known bug? I tried searching , but most results are 2-3 years old, when the feature was relatively new.

Thanks

I think the REAL question is why is this outage of icloud not a bigger story? I’ve been searching and no one seems to be talking about it. No news stories. Nothing on any of the major search engines.

Same issues on both my iPhone, my Mac and my partner iPhone! I disabled it until tomorrow! :open_mouth:

EDIT: the status page does not say much: Apple - Support - System Status

Under settings/ iCloud / Private relay you have an option to disable it, you can do it permanently or “until tomorrow”.

I’ve been having the same problem. It affects quite a few different services and apps in odd ways.

I’m also having the same problem on my Macbook. The iPhone does not seem to be having the same problem though.

EDIT:

This is the error message I get in Safari:

Safari Can’t Connect to iCloud Private Relay

Safari can’t open the page. The error is: “The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory” (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:2)

EDIT 2:

Mac Rumours is also reporting this outage.

I’ve rebooted my phone three times today thinking it was something with my WiFi specifically, but not actually enough to troubleshoot it properly. Same exact issue

Same! I just rebooted and when I opened my safari, it showed my saved folders with just a bunch of letters scattered throughout. Everything else seems to be working fine except safari

Same issue here but on iPhone

Having same problem right now

Following having the exact same issue. Any solution so far?

EDIT: i just updated to the latest MacOS and it seems to be working now :white_check_mark:

The IPR issue, does it have anything to do with Safari? This morning, Safari would not load any sites. I wasn’t sure if it was on my end or if it was related to IPR outage.

Same here, I think something is happening in Apple, and they aren’t telling us what it is, it seems that the IPR is down for some reason, because if you disable you can use Safari but when you activate it just crashes everything, either IRP is down or someone made something wrong and they’re fixing

on iphone it seems to be working okay, but on my mac, it is still not working even though the apple status report shows that it has been resolved. very weird that it takes this long to fix

It has so many issues, not just on Mac but also on iOS, especially when using VPNs. Sometimes, the only fix is restarting the Mac or iOS device. Such poorly made software.

If you use Steam and having download/no internet connection issues on Mac turn off private relay, do what you need to do then turn it back on. I’m posting this for anyone who Googles looking for a solution. Steam and Apple really need to get it together

Is private relay under attack? It keeps going down and up

Update: I waited a few hours, the issue was still there. Then I rebooted my devices and it “fixed” itself.

yes I did that, that’s how I figured out it was causing the problem. What I didn’t understand is why it interferes with my internet connection.

That is because Safari is the only app that Private Relay protects.
