Pls. recommend the best VPN for iPhone

Call me an internet security freak coz I’m really not comfortable accessing my accounts outside my home wifi or mobile data. Now that I’ll be traveling soon, I’m on the lookout for a VPN that I can use on my iPhone. Please can someone recommend a VPN that’s reliable and affordable too? TIA!

EDIT: Thank you for all the suggestions! I went with NordVPN as the friend I am traveling with was subscribed to it and she was happy with the service.

I use NordVPN. I paid like $80 for 2.5 years.

Proton vpn / surfshark both of these are good.

I’ve used express vpn for last 4-5 years. I don’t live in the US.

we’ve been using surfshark for a long time.

there’s also nordVPN, which has better reviews.

I had surf shark previously but find I have far fewer issues connecting with Nord. I prefer Nord.

I would strongly recommend Proton VPN based in Switzerland. It offers the best privacy and security features. Swiss law is airtight on internet privacy. I can tell you about it because I’m Swiss and I live in Geneva. We have very citizens oriented laws here. The state can not interfere with citizens’ privacy. Torrenting is even legal here. Sharing files that be music or films has always been tolerated, although that’s not the subject.

You may want to know that there is a free way to secure your connection apart from a regular VPN, and that’s with Orbot. It’s a small program that routes your connection thru the Tor network for free. It is as good as a VPN. You can use it with Adguard, for example. Set up blocking lists with it. Set an https certificate so that your connection blocks any http traffic. You can choose a custom DNS like Quad9, for example, with servers also based in Switzerland. If you want, you can even set Adguard to work in concordance with Orbot thru a proxy. Orbot is free, but Adguard is not. Not if you want all the features anyway. I think there is a free version, but I’m not sure how limited it is. For my part, I love so much Adguard. I bought a lifetime license. I think it cost me $90 for 3 devices at the time. It’s a fantastic tool to block all adds and trackers, and if you use Orbot over it, your security is absolutely airtight.

Good luck with your research. I hope I helped a bit. All the best.

Proton VPN is free for one device and no customized features.

Does any one is using Surfshark?

I have a synology router that lets you set up a VPN server. When I’m not at home I can route all traffic through my home connection, and connect to my home server if I want. You can use free synology dynamic dns to set up an address like [username].synology.me that always stays the same even if your home connection IP address changes.

There’s an initial setup cost for the router cost after that it’s free.

Tailscale, completely free. Just make sure to have another device (either windows or Linux) at home always on with Exit Node enabled. Connect to it on your main device and you’ll be connected to your home network, more secure than connecting to some unknown vpn servers. Most of the suggestions that were given here aren’t totally secure and are slow when using the internet. At least give it a try with your main pc and enabling Exit Node (must be enabled from the admin panel) and then you can try using your phone’s data to see how it is.

Hola VPN, proton sucks imo

I use vpn - super unlimited proxy
It’s free u just click with ads and you get one quick ad

What do you mean most suggestions? Most suggestions here are paid vpns which are in most cases going to be as fast as your native connection and more secure and private than your home connection which uses your isp.

You telling me your home router is more secure and your isp is more secure and private than something like mullvad which survived raids because they got nothing to hand over?

Using tailscale with your home network on public wifis is “secure” in the sense your traffic is encrypted through your own home network sure but doesnt change the fact your home network is nowhere near as good as something like mullvad.

mysteriumvpn Is my fav low key gets around any blockers

Tailscale has Mullvad vpn option as well, 5 USD a month and up to 5 devices, has a list of nodes in most countries. That’s actually what I use and have been using while traveling and it has been much faster and more reliable than the other paid options mentioned here.
I am not disagreeing with anything that you said, in fact I agree with all that you said and hence why I recommend Tailscale. It’s just not as fiddly, and of course if OP wants a more secure firewall, well that’s on him to set it up on his home router.

Im on 900 up/down at home and mullvad and majority vpns mentioned here max that. Outside in public wifis or 4/5g its a fraction of that, so you must be getting insane speeds in your country if you say you struggled with other vpns here maxing speeds.

Also unsure why paid vpns are unreliable for you. Ive used a LOT different ones for over a decade never had issues.

All in all, isnt the whole point of tailscale to essentially be able to connect via/to your own network? Meaning your client that runs tailscale, so for most people it would be a windows machine, needs to be running 24/7 no? Versus just having mullvad app on their phone, cannot see tailscale being worth unless you require it for niche scenarios.

Tailscale seems useful for securely connecting to a specific device, but if just for privacy while browsing, why not simply use the Mullvad iOS app?

For general use, any other paid VPNs will do the job well enough. But since the post isn’t about me, there’s no point in explaining the niche which I use Tailscale for, since it’s not simply for general use. There’s specific apps on my iPhone as well as specific games on the PC that don’t like VPNs being used as they get triggered and such might result in a ban.

I don’t know why you keep going on about me having a problem with VPNs when all I’m doing is recommending a choice, you are free to do the same. I’m not obligated to give explanations as to the specifics of my VPN usage. The OP is free to try my suggestion or to simply ignore my post. I can tell that you and I have similar knowledge in the field but I use VPNs for specific scenarios. And yes, I’ve been using VPNs for decades as well…

Also, I do run Mullvad through Tailscale on my phone, no need to have a windows machine running 24/7 for that.

I don’t see why not either if you are not connecting to any devices. It’s annoying to keep switching back and forth Tailscale app and Mullvad app, Tailscale already got the same Mullvad service incorporated, so I pay through there instead of Mullvad, it’s just a matter of efficiency while you got other devices to also manage. Also another reason being, my partner is in a country where popular VPNs are banned but Tailscale works with the Mullvad service enabled so yeah there’s also that
