Playing videogames with my long-distance friends with the same ping with VPN... is that possible?

Hi everyone, my name is Luca and I need an information from people more expert than me… I’m Italian and in April I’m moving in Australia. I’m using to play Warzone with my friends: is there a way to keep playing with my friends with a normal ping (or reducing it becouse proximately it would be 250-350ms) using VPN? Thanks to everyone and sorry for my incorrect english!

I moved from same place in europe to australia. Forget fps with ure friends. Its unplayable unfortunately. Mostly because most of internet traffic from AU to Europe goes via US. And latency is simply too high due to distance. VPN doesnt resolve this, its not its job.
You can play RPGs and turn based games, but not fps, legit unplayable at 250ms.

:frowning: sad but true. Sorry man.

Even with VPN the ping is going to be high

You can set a geofence or have someone who is in the middle of you host the lobby. A VPN doesn’t change the region you’re queuing in, it just makes the game believe you are queuing from somewhere else.

2 or 3 games a week for the squad… never leave my soldiers :face_holding_back_tears:. Thank u anyway, very useful comment. Sad, but real. Thanks m8

Maybe if we all set in India we could have a ping around 100-150ms but still playable, more difficult… but playable. It could be a solution?

I’m not good about it. Is that difficult? Sure, I will try!

TLDR: Nope, xlag, wtfast and others dont work in this case.

Details:
Reason being, these services find somewhat the fastest network route from A to B. However, that only works in smaller distances. For example east to west coast of same country like US or europe. But when moving intercontinental you simply have no choice but to follow the undersea fibre optics cables and routing that takes you there. Australia only has a few exists, some via Asia and some via Pacific/US. Most of telcos go via US but whichever way you take, you cant beat the native speed which is fibre optics + SP router latencies.
Same reason why VPNs dont work, ypu may be connected A to B and see a single hop (called overlay) but you are still bound by the physical paths it takes you (called underlay). It is the underlay that dictates latency not overlay.

A happy medium is to have a server somewhere midway, like central US or Saudi Arabia (the other way) and split latency for both parties but that means both sides will have 140 ms instead of one side having 280 ms. Unfortunately in a competitive FPS even 140 ms is pretty annoying cause it manifests as lag, delay, packet drop, desyncs of game etc.

This is why only games that are not lag sensitive are fine. Like i play RPGs like Baldurs gate 3 or whater and u can barely even notice it cause difference between user actions is greater than the lag usually.

Source: im a highly skilled network engineer   i tried to find all possible ways. I even tested starlink lol. Similar problem.

Ye i know man. One thing i miss the most from home. We play RPGs on weekends now. Also timezone suck lol. Has to be their morning and ure afternoon. Good luck.

If you pick an in between state, it always depends on the quality of the line . It doesn’t depend 100% on distance. Search on google if there is a ping calculator between states. And vpn to the same if shares the same ping , Italy —Y–> x <—Y-- Australia

You can by a router that allows you to geofence or you can download something that will set the geofence for you. Just do your homework, you’ll figure it out.

That sucks. My follow up question was why does xlag work for us lobbies but you answered this in your very informative reply. My only question is what vpn setup do you advise I use to get us lobby’s on my ps5?

Thanks for ur time, really appreciate that :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thanks m8, appreciate that. Really useful!

I dont know which VPN to use, im sure someone using them can recommend one. The only thing a VPN does is takes your traffic and drops you in another region, making geo location services confused. (In the context of this discussion. It still does encryption/decryption etc.)

I dont know which one u can use for PS5 or which one wont get u detected by activision sorry😞 i dont have a ps5 nor do i use a VPN for gaming.
