I just did a speed test on my Firestick 4K max without PIA being on. The download speed was around 190mbps, which is about right for the speed I’ve signed up to. However I need PIA on so a couple of other apps will work too. With PIA on, the speed decreases to just 30mbps. How is this possible?
This is just how VPNs work, you’ll get a slower download speed because everything becomes encrypted, passes through more servers than normal, then decrypted. You may get better results from different locations, but there will always be some decrease.
i would look into the USB ETHERNET ADAPTER for your fire-stick… it might help. Like the other person had said, VPN’s will drop speeds a bit… sometimes quite a bit and sometimes a lot… just depends on the vpn and where your connecting to among a number of other factors.
The vpn is not the cause. I use express vpn on my laptop and firstick. With vpn off firestick gets the same speed as the laptop with vpn off. I have a 600mbps connection and with vpn on my laptop still gets around 300mbps, vpn turned on the firestick and that speed wont go above 70mbps 90 if im lucky. It is not the vpn it is the firestick causing the problem. If you use the same exact settings and location everything identical with both sitting right next to each other and the speed difference is there every time and not a small difference this is a difference of a couple hundred mbps then its definitely the firestick. And yes tests are done with nothing else being connected. The firestick is causing the ridiculous drop in speed as if they used the slowest network adapter possible. Why they would pair a 4k streaming device with a slow wifi adapter makes no sense.
Well the Firestick connects via HDMI and has a wifi connection. I’m in the UK and point PIA to a US location with a ping of less than 100ms. There’s no way to look into the Firestick’s Ethernet adaptor.

There are no settings on the Firestick to check the Ethernet. It’s either connected to WiFi or not. But never mind I’ve changed now to Surfshark - a 7 fold increase in speed.
