About 1-2 months ago we had an extended period (maybe 3 weeks) of debilitating packet loss (persistent 70-90%) in NZ, and from what I can tell it affected some AU players as well. It’s now back and better than ever, and it looks like more AU players are affected this time around. It started about 26-May for me. Does anyone know why this happens? Is it a Valve problem or is it something to do with the fibre cables supplying the whole area?
UPDATE: Some helpful fam in the comments have suggested various VPNs which solve the issue in most cases. Annoying that a decent connection to the game is now behind a paywall, but these are trying times. dacljaco suggested using Mudfish which I’ve jumped on, which has been working so far. You can chuck $5 AUD on it (one-off) to pay per traffic, and get plenty of bandwidth to last until Valve pulls finger and fixes this. Godspeed.
It’s because packets are being sent in a suboptimal route, my friend showed me how to check in console but I have forgotten how, basically it’s taking like 15 bounces to get the information to the right server. You can use something like mudfish or a vpn to create a more direct route and completely erase the packet loss issue. Source: I had 90% + packet loss a month or two ago for about 20-30 games before my friend told me about mudfish, and since then have never even had 1 packet loss.
It’s so shit at the moment.
I’m taking time off dota until they sort it out.
Games on the Aus server aren’t playable.
/u/JeffHill I wouldn’t ping you if it wasn’t serious. Please help the peeps down under.
Or, at least confirm if this is on Valve, or should I shout at my IPS.
Thanks!
Please everyone upvote this again. Last time it didnt get fixed until one of the reddit threads got high enough
Not sure if it’s a routing issue for specific ISPs but I haven’t had any packet loss issues at all. Telstra/QLD-based if that helps, couple of the other players in our lobby were also unaffected on Telstra but the rest could barely play.
is it possile to reach valve official support here?
tracert from my connection to valve servers with Aussie Broadband. I have no packet loss issues atm:
Tracing route to 103-10-125-146.valve.net [103.10.125.146]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.86.1
2 9 ms 10 ms 9 ms loop159196640.bng.vic.aussiebb.net [159.196.64.1]
3 22 ms 21 ms 21 ms HundredGigE0-0-0-14.cfl1.equinix-me1.mel.aussiebb.net [202.142.143.112]
4 25 ms 23 ms * 10.241.4.144
5 24 ms * * be400.lsr2.200bou.nsw.aussiebb.net [180.150.0.192]
6 21 ms 20 ms 21 ms 103-10-125-146.valve.net [103.10.125.146]
Trace complete.
My mate was having 70% packet loss, he’s on optus. Don’t have the actual tracert but his was 13 hops.
I’m still packet less free as on 5pm 30/5
Anyone here with Optus network? I suspect it’s an Optus issue
few of us from NZ are finding unplayable. i had 93% packet loss, so bad.
Unplayable in Australia right now.
Using a VPN seems to help with this issue. Am from QLD and with TPG, I have a Surfshark VPN which I connect to their Brisbane server which basically creates a better routing rather than without a VPN, and i’m on a stable 29-30ms ping with no packet loss.
You could try getting a VPN and connecting to your nearest server (i.e. if you are from NSW connect to Sydney, VIC to Melb, WA to Perth etc.)
I use this method as well when I play other games and the VPN gives me a better ping every time rather than using your ISP’s default shitty routing.
Same as well, and even worse is it’s inconsistent so I can’t even check if it’s shit before I queue up, so not risking it at the moment. I can create 5 custom lobbies in a row and 2 will have packet loss, 1 will be completely normal 30-40ms, and 2 will have no packet loss but 220 ms.
Been having problems in the AU servers in CS2 aswell
From the discussion here it seems the best way to get a longer term solution (rather than short term mudfish/exitlag option) is for all affected people to lodge tickets with their ISP.
Include your tracert outputs, even a link to this thread. If they get enough tickets to identify it as a real issue they’ll probably fix it.
Ayawp, it’s a real struggle
Melbourne here, been experiencing varying packet loss from 30-90 since the update. So frustrating
