I’ve seen some recent posts from people experiencing difficulties accessing various streaming services or encountering general issues with the NordVPN app across various devices. Therefore I thought I would share some tips on how to use the application on TV’s.
How to install NordVPN on TV devices
If you are using an Android TV, an Android box*,* Nvidia Shield, or any other TV device based on Android, you can easily download the application from the Play Store. Alternatively, you can download it from the NordVPN website directly here.
You can find a basic tutorial for installing the application in this article.
The same applies to users that have Amazon Fire devices (Firestick, Fire Cube) and Apple TV. You can download the application from the Amazon app store or Apple app store.
How to use NordVPN on TV devices
Using the application on TV devices is quite simple. Once you are logged in, you’ll find only one button to use: “Connect now”. The algorithm automatically selects the closest and less loaded server based on your actual location.
Alternatively, you can manually select a country from the list to connect to a specific location. If you prefer a particular server, you can use the search field and enter the country or server number. For instance, typing“France #” will display the full list of France servers, while typing “France #860” will show that specific server for connection.
The specialty servers list allows you to access different server categories such as P2P, Obfuscated, Dedicated IP, Double VPN and Onion over VPN servers.
In the “Settings” section, you can check your subscription status, set up Auto-connect, or access the “Settings” sub-menu to manage your NordVPN features. This includes enabling/disabling Threat Protection Lite, switching VPN protocols, enabling local network discovery, and setting up Custom DNS.
It’s worth mentioning that Apple TV does not offer similar functionalities and lacks some features available on Android-based TV’s.
Some Tips and Tricks
- Ensure your connection Isn’t leaking any data, such as DNS, IPV6, and WebRTC leaks. You can check your connection on the NordVPN website to see if it displays “Protected” on the top of the page, or use the dnsleaktest.com website.
- Applications cache. If you encounter issues accessing certain streaming applications, try reinstalling the application while connected to the VPN servers. If you’re unable to uninstall it, clear the cache of the particular app.
- Try connecting with different servers in the same location. I recommend trying servers with higher numbers, as they are typically the latest additions to the server list. Alternatively, use the server picker tool and then use the search field to find servers that may resolve the issue.
- Threat Protection feature. Occasionally, this feature might interfere with streaming applications. For troubleshooting purposes, try disabling it.
- DNS addresses. Consider adding NordVPN DNS addresses to your device to ensure secure DNS requests. You can find more information in this article.
So that’s all I know, gathered over time and verified personally. I sincerely hope it helps some of you. Additionally, if you notice someone struggling with similar issues, please share this post with them.
