I’ve recently decided to get a VPN and went with NordVPN. So far I’ve had no issues. I installed the NordVPN Chrome Extension and it got me wondering why? If the NordVPN App that is running is supposed to be a system wide VPN then why do I need a specific one for just my browser? If I’m using the Nord app can I just delete the browser extension?
The browser extension is indeed superfluous barring unusual circumstances.
You could whitelist one browser via split-tunnelling if the VPN gives you any browsing trouble. Then you could use the extension on a specific website if you wanted to “go dark” briefly. You could also just fire up a second VPN instance if for some reason you wanted to go VPN-over-VPN. Or, say, if you were using a friend’s PC that didn’t have the regular app installed.
I once thought it was safer if my VPN IP while torrent browsing was different than my VPN IP in qBittorent. That gave me a reason to test out double wrapping. Works fine. Don’t see it as really necessary.
I think they are trying to make there tools accessible to every one. They provide the full app so you can download it and install it on your own pc. But i guess the browser extension can help in situations where you can’t install the app on the computer.
You can delete the extension if you want. The full version of the app provides more features than the extension does. I have the exactions installed just in case.
Im guessing becuase other vpns also have extensions and it provides more platform for advertising. Im glad they do have it since their split tunneling is broken and I typically only need my browser to go through vpn. Unless I need to hide my IP or concern about privacy for certain apps, going through vpn gives more chance of slower speed and unstable connection, both I dont want if Im gaming or such.
I have the extension on one chrome user so I can use an overseas server to stream baseball and cast it to the tv, while browsing using the app using local us servers.
