Not sure if this is a known problem with a workaround/fix I googled but was barely able to find any info on it. It seems that apple has broken VPNs on macOS ventura (decided to do my yearly update since I assumed ventura would be stable/bugfree by now) and now no matter what you do half the time you get “err_socket_not_connected” when going to any website.
Does anyone have a fix/workaround to make it go away? I really don’t want to have to move my VPN back onto my router since PIA purposefully limiting connection speed on routers left a sour taste in my mouth and was the whole reason I switched to the mac client to begin with (do they still throttle routers?).
The only replies on the apple forum are “vpns are a scam anyways unless you have to use one for work” which is such a braindead take it’s exactly what I should have expected so I’m not even going to bother asking there.
Pia doesn’t limit any speed on routers, maybe it’s the router that slows your speed down. I have the same problem with the router and according to the settings the router speed increases considerably. For the error you have you have to solve the problem on your operating system.
Can confirm. I just got a new M1 Mac with Ventura and I’m getting the exact same issue. Its not for every website. It seems completely random. It will also pop up the error message and then load the site without any interaction. It’s like a 1-2 second delay. Error, then the site loads. It also seems to load fine if I’m in the same session. So if I click on reddit, I get the error, then it loads. and if I reload it again a few min later, it works. But if I put the Mac to sleep and come back, I get the error again.
This issue does not exist on my older 2012 MacBoo Pro (Catalina) on the same network, same VPN connection.
I am getting this as well, but it only seems to be with a Chromium based browser (Arc). Safari is working fine. Another thread suggested clearing all tokens/cache in browsers with this behavior.
I found a solution that worked for me. Ventura seems to hide the simple feature but you can disable IPV6 as command line instructions:
- Open Terminal
- Type in command
networksetup -listallnetworkservices
. This command will list all devices that are using the internet. You’ll see at least Wi-Fi, maybe others.
- To disable IPv6, type in command
networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi
. If you are using Ethernet as well, type in networksetup -setv6off Ethernet
.
Since doing this I’ve had no more “socket connection” errors in Chrome (or Brave).
I went to my WiFi in Settings, Details then TCP/IP and changed the setting at Configure IPv6 of Automatic to Only link-local
I guess I’m moving it back to the PFsense box then, I can’t find any links to back it up but I vividly remember PIA support admitting to limiting router connections to 100Mbps per connection (must have been 5-6+ years ago) since “they have no way to check how many devices are behind a router” and back then it was max 5 devices per account so 100Mbps for a router was deemed a reasonable to prevent abuse.
So if I click on reddit, I get the error, then it loads. and if I reload it again a few min later, it works. But if I put the Mac to sleep and come back, I get the error again.
Yep exactly the same here and if it doesn’t auto-reload a manual reload does the trick, sometimes you need to reload 2-3 times like on flightradar. First time it fails, 1st reload it loads the stuff on flightradar itself and only after the 2nd reload will it load in the google maps map data. Same for embedded images on reddit posts and half the youtube thumbnails for some reason.
Can’t help but wonder how many 3rd party tracking scripts on websites will fail to load because of this.
Nope only thing we can do is cross our fingers and hope apple fixes it with the next macOS release it seems. I haven’t tried the preview I’ll upgrade when it’s release ready.
I have the same issue in macOS Sonoma. Unfortunately it does not help me.
networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi
applied this and so far all is working. thanks
Keep in mind if you’re using some kinda 5G network based home internet solution (or hotspot) such as T-Mobile’s internet, Verizon’s 5G, or Cox’s 5G that this will effectively shut off all internet connection as those specific kinda services depend specifically on IPV6.
I didn’t think about it and shut off my network, so to turn it back on use networksetup -setv6automatic Wi-Fi
and/or networksetup -setv6automatic Ethernet
This is really odd honestly. Before I updated this was never an issue.
Thank you I’ve had this issue for months! So glad to come across your resolution!
I’ll give it a shot and get back to you. Knowing Apple though we’ll be SOL for the next two years until someone makes a paid solution or something.
No, still broken, but now my volume mixer program doesn’t work
