I’m tired of having VPN app on each device separately. And forgetting to turn on VPN and also VPN draining the batteries of devices faster.
So I’m looking to have a seperate router that have VPN installed on it. Proton VPN website says that it supports router that have OpenVPN clients.
I’m looking for a router that can provide at least 100Mbps with the vpn turned on.
I’ve read that depending upon routers processing capabilities vpn speed will be low on the low end and mid range routers.
Which router would you guys suggest?
I’m looking for something in range of 300-500$.
…
Edit
Thanks all for the ideas and suggestions. Decided to go forward with Asus RT Ax88u.
ProtonVPN partnered with InvizBox for dedicated routers for ProtonVPN. Among the other suggestions, I think this is also worth checking out. https://www.invizbox.com/invizbox-2-protonvpn/
Failing that, just changing to a privacy focused DNS at the router level will help a good amount. Shame Proton doesn’t give out their Net Guard DNS details and have it work for subscription accounts linked to your IP like NextDNS for example. A partnership there would be epic.
I run an Asus RT-AX86U (on Merlin’s firmware) with ProtonVPN. Fast speed, and have mine setup so my guest network (iot) goes through VPN and regular network does not. Not saying that meets your needs, more that it has a lot of options with VPN.
Which router do you use? Also, if I’m browsing through different router options… what classification or spec should I look for on any router to know that it will be compatible with having it run Proton VPN? Thanks!
I have a few Pi 4B sitting around from a previous hobby project, so might try this out.
Although I’m not really a fan of having raspberry pi’s running all day long in my house. The wizzing sound of fans make you loose your sanity. And last time i had pi’s running forever , they had overheating issues even while running basic python scripts. Can’t imagine how much they will overheat when constant traffic is passing through it.
Still it will be a fun project and a good learning experience.
Will probably buy a router as well for the permanent solution.
Which asus router do you use? I’m looking to get a decent one for the same purpose as OP. (possibly with capability to direct certain devices traffic around the VPN as well)
NextDNS does the same with a paid and free version, Proton would just be the paid version or only available to paid VPN users linked to device IP. Think all I was asking is for a customizable DNS I can run on my Android devices without using the VPN because that spot is taken up with an app firewall.
