Jan 1st deadline means 11:59 p.m. on Jan 1st, in your local time zone (i.e., the evening before Jan 2nd)

For more information, check the FAQ on the commonapp.org:

#####When is the deadline for my application submission?

To meet an application deadline, you must submit your application materials by 11:59 pm on the deadline date posted on your Dashboard. The end of the deadline date is in your local time zone, not the college’s time zone. Keep in mind, all timestamps are recorded in EST (US Eastern Standard Time).

It is always better to submit well before 11:59 pm to avoid last minute issues with your computer or internet access that might cause you to miss the deadline!

Example 1:
You are in New York and have an application with a deadline of January 1. You have until 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time January 1 to submit your application.

Example 2:
You are in California and have an application with a deadline of January 1. You have until 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time January 1 to submit your application.

Example 3:
You are in Shanghai and have an application with a deadline of January 2. You have until 11:59 pm China Standard Time January 2 to submit your application.

#####Disclaimer from u/seramac2:

This is not actually true for all schools. NYU specifically states 11:59 PM EST. That’s the only school that I’m aware of that requires EST and not your local time zone, but I would hate for people to see this and not check for all the schools they’re applying to.

Re: u/thiswasthoughtof earlier post

Additional notes:

- it’s generally fine if your supporting materials arrive after the deadline. this includes: testing, transcript, recommendations, etc.
- it’s generally fine if your application is 2 minutes late. if you’re able to submit, you’ve submitted. wait a few days, if you don’t get a confirmation email, check in with the school
- look into fee waiver policies, applying to college is expensive
- a tiny typo here or there will not be the end of you, but also proof read because best foot forward
- please make sure to celebrate a little bit, applying to college is a huge life milestone! but not too much because we really do take second semester grades seriously (sorry!)

Good fortunes, everyone!

seeing this post gave me anxiety. i have to get my ass off reddit and finish those 5 remaining apps lol

Pro tip (although I wouldn’t risk it): if your local timezone deadline has passed, use a VPN service connecting you with a server somewhere where the local time Isn’t past midnight

Oh, you daredevils and thrill seekers…

I think Carnegie Mellon also said 11:59 EST.

What if I set a VPN to Hawaii?

When are supplemental essays due? With the common app?

And I think Emory accepts throughout the first week of Jan. Atleast that’s what it said in my email. I’m an international student btw

Emory also requires that the application be submitted by 11:59 P.M. on Jan 1st

is it just me or does commonapp say TODAY by 11:59 for some colleges? i’m shitting my pants, like i know its tomorrow at 11:59 but it’s weird seeing commonapp like this

Thank you I was worried I would have to submit today before 12am

Fantastic, I’ve been wondering how the hell the deadline works and if I was gonna have to stress myself tonight or not

Does this go for cc also?

unfortunately this wasn’t true for harvard either

If it says the deadline date is my local time, then how did I not pass my deadlines half a day later than the deadline date(I’m in China, half a day earlier than EST time)

By care about second semester grades, you mean just not too bad to get rescinded right?

Wait so do I add the recommender and it would be okay for him to submit lor after deadline…?

Do writing supplements count as supporting material, or are they due along with the applications?

NYU sent me an email saying that it’s 11:59 PM in my own time zone (but my time zone is EST).
