It’s National “Get a VPN” Day in Australia

Not Australian, but what’s the best VPN option out there?

I’m getting NBN - my innanets will be to fast foor them to catch me metadata.

If anyone wants the quick run down (if i missed anything let me know…):

So things you should know:

  • Hola is bad and was a bot net at 1 point, AVOID

  • Chrome extension VPN’s aren’t magic and will not protect you outside the browser, they have 1 job to hide your chrome browsing so don’t expect them to magically hide your torrents.

  • IPv6 FTTP NBN connections can leak your computer’s ip if you skimp out on a bad VPN or misconfigure your VPN, make sure you test this with ipleak.com and have a VPN that supports ipv6

  • Sometimes a thing called WebRTC can leak your computers ip address, there is a chrome extension to disable WebRTC (its used mainly in loading media elements faster), again test with ipleak.com

  • VPN’s are reliant on the server/tunnel speed (you have no control over this) so expect a drop of download speed while on a VPN, this speed can vary widely based on bottlenecking, shit servers, shit VPN’s etc. Some may never see a noticeable difference (if you have reasonable base speed, but ADSL1 people well… don’t even try)

  • VPN’s can be used to bypass annoying geolocation content restriction =)

Private internet access is widely considered the best

  • Has SOCK5 proxy settings for your anonymous torrents (if you want that)

  • Has Servers outside the 5 eyes (You should be using these, Switzerland or Romania are good options i wouldn’t game on them though)

  • No logs

  • Supports Router level, Server level and Browser level what ever type you like.

  • Has various Leak prevention’s

Edit : just wanted to add that others recommend mullvad, seems to offer similar services to pia, proberly worth checking out.

I used PIA for a bit, but my speeds are shit enough as is (5km from the centre of Melbourne thanks Malcolm ya fuckwit) and it definitely slowed my net down, and would drop out all together sometimes.

I definitely need to look into a new one though

I wonder what law enforcement will target first

Saddest part is - if I were to take a guess or could bet on it - I’d bet that a large majority of the population doesn’t even know about this.

Their ignorance is bliss until it potentially bites them in the ass.

If you value your privacy get a VPN. For home use its best to get a router that can be configured to use a VPN. This way your whole network and wifi will be automatically protected when any device connects to it.

Plenty of choices but AFAIK only PIA have been tested in court and refused to hand over user data

Any suggestions on VPNs for Australians? I hear good things about Nord and Airvpn, less so about Private Internet Access, but it’s always reviews from Americans. Never hear about speeds for Australians…

The more Australians to signup for VPN provider, the more complaints with slow download NBN speeds been negatively doubled.

Possibly a stupid question, but would a VPN slow down your internet traffic? Also, with a VPN active am I still able to use torrents?

So from today onwards or can they see i was torrenting shit montha ago?

Orwell wrote Nineteen-Eighty Four as a warning, not an instruction manual.

This site has a great deal (5 days left on deal) on 2 years PIA subscription for US$59.95, luckily mine was due for renewal in 3 weeks. I renewed through this site and can confirm it works.

Usually it’s US$39 for 1 year.

Good thing I stocked up on my midget tranny interracial porn just last night

Probably a good idea to get a VPN not based in the USA… you know… the whole NSA thing…

For a good vpn I’d suggest Mullvad. No emails or logs or anything. Can also pay by bitcoin.

Would be a laugh if ISPs started offering free VPNs with their deals, just to show the government how pissed off they are.

Can I get a VPN for my iPad?
