Issues with Xfinity and Facebook

Good morning, I saw someone post earlier about issues with their Xfinity service and Facebook recently. I am having the exact same issues where pages won’t fully load sometimes. It seems to be related to a CDN.

In debug, I receive the following types of messages:

  • Failed to load resource: The server requires a client certificate.
  • Failed to load resource: Could not connect to the server.
  • ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE
  • ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT

When using other service providers OR a VPN, everything loads as expected. I have switched up DNS servers from the default Xfinity servers to Cloudflare and Google, but that didn’t resolve the issue.

Same thing happening here for the past few days with all Meta sites (Instagram, Facebook, Threads). Slow/unable to load most of the pages through web browsers or official apps when accessing through Comcast/Xfinity internet. Works fine through other ISP’s/cellular/VPN.

Wanted to note I’ve had the issue pop up here and there at home for a year or so, but this is the longest it’s gone on for.

Hey there, u/Snoo57195! Thank you so much for taking the time to reach out to us today. Are you experiencing any other connection concerns with other sites or just Facebook? When did this issue begin? Do you experience this same issue on hardwired devices?

**edit** - The issue appears to have been fixed as of Monday 2024-01-22

Same issue here in Richmond, VA. Probably going on close to two weeks. I also tried:

  • Switching DNS servers to google and cloudflare, no help.
  • Rebooting router multiple times, no help.
  • Loads correctly on 4G (Verizon)
  • Loads correctly using the Google VPN
  • Affects Facebook, Threads, and Instagram. Although Instagram seems to be better today (2024-01-21)

So it definitely seems to be a Comcast/Xfinity problem.

I’m having the same experience here, in Winchester, VA area. Meta services are fine on other ISP platforms, but spotty on Comcast.

For nine days, from Jan. 13, 2024 to Jan. 22, I was unable to connect from Lynchburg, Virginia via Xfinity to Facebook’s content server scontent (.) fric1-2 (.) fna (.) fbcdn (.) net , a problem which resulted in broken Facebook images and videos. The traceroute consistently died at dti01 (.) martinsville (.) va (.) richmond (.) comcast (.) net This issue finally cleared up on Monday, Jan. 22, however, it returned on Wednesday evening, Jan. 24. The workarounds during this period were to use my cellular digital network (T-Mobile) when accessing Facebook on the smartphone, and to use a VPN when accessing Facebook from my Windows laptop. This morning, scontent (.) fric1-2 (.) fna (.) fbcdn (.) net remains unreachable via Xfinity. Interestingly, Facebook does not seem at this moment to be attempting to serve me any content from this server, and I am not at this moment seeing broken images or videos as I was Wed. evening, but I don’t expect this to last. There is clearly some sort of routing issue, well beyond my connection. I can supply a traceroute if needed.

Anyone still experiencing this? I’m in California

Thanks for speaking up! Are you located in the mid atlantic area by chance? There is a growing number of us that are all located near each other.

I would say this started this past weekend (or at least that is when I first noticed it). This happens on wireless and wired connections. The only site that I am having issues with is Facebook - both through their website AND iOS apps (both iPhone and iPad).

Using my phone without wifi, Facebook loads correctly. Using a VPN through my Xfinity connection results in success as well.

I’m also having this issue. As stated, when using my comcast account the videos show the black screen with the error message. My phone works fine

Yeah. This is on their end. They say they are working on it. I hope that they really are. I’m about 20 min away from you!

Same here, Located in Central VA and having the same issue.

Same issue here in Chesterfield, VA. It’s been going on for about a 1-2 weeks I would say, with the same issues mentioned in all the recent posts regarding FB/IG. I have had Comcast for18 years in the same location and would drop them in a heartbeat for a wired alternative.

So this issue seems to be resolved for me this morning (Monday 2024-01-22). Can others confirm?

It was fixed as of Jan. 22, but resurfaced Wednesday evening, Jan. 24, with the same specific Facebook content server being unreachable via Xfinity. I am in Lynchburg.

Yeap, in VA. Made my own separate post/ticket as well.

Hmm, that is certainly strange u/Snoo57195. I would like to dive further into troubleshooting with you, and see what we can do to help with the connection concerns on Facebook. We did receive your Modmail message and will continue to work with you there.

you will need start your own post to reddit so that official employees may assist. This thread is solved and comments are now locked.

u/Snoo57195 We are, I see its listed as a known issue. This is being worked on by our engineers with the Meta teams. We’ll continue to monitor the progress and get this thread an update as soon as we see one. Thanks for being patient, we appreciate it a ton. Have a great weekend.
