Is there any advantage of using VPN at router level?

I have setup my Windscribe VPN on my GL.iNet router through WireGuard profile. All my main routers and extenders are passing their traffic through it. All my household internet is flowing through WindScribe and DNS requests are handled by ControlD with no analytics enabled for all devices. Is there any advantage of me using this way or I am just skipping ISP monitoring but rest remain the same?

No, especially Apple and Android can call home even when a VPN is turned on. Apple and Google bypass certain services outside a VPN. So when using a VPN on router level you can avoid this by forcing everything via a VPN tunnel.

I am on FLINT (gl.inet) using ProtonVPN and also Windsribe.

You can read more about APPLE bypassing a VPN: HERE

Just so to be clear on my side. I have adguard installed with stealth mode on, on all my devices. So digital fingerprinting I don’t need to care about.

VPN access for devices that don’t have a client, like smart tv’s

Disadvantage: if you take a device outside your LAN, such as to public Wi-Fi, you may forget that you’re no longer covered by a VPN.

Benefit would be that all your devices connected to the router would be via that VPN connection.

So specially a TV with weaker hardware can maybe have more throughput this way if your router got a pretty strong CPU for the encryption even WG overburdens most routers.

also in the super rare case ( if your router doesnt allow non tunneled traffic ) your internet will be cut in the super rare case the vpn server goes down.

you also wont forget new devices and technically even lightbulbs and stuff communicate via the VPN then.

I am just skipping ISP monitoring but rest remain the same?

Mostly the same obviously your ISP cant DPI your traffic.

Hi, I am aware of this situation with Apple, hence I use the ControlD DNS profile on my Apple devices and the router level. So even if this is the case, my router-level VPN can confuse Apple services and ask them to use a VPN tunnel. I am using a Slate AX travel router for home use. It is pretty powerful and scheduled tasks be it for rebooting or transmission power, I loved the most.

So digital fingerprinting I don’t need to care about.

Digitial fingerprinting can happen in many ways and adguards application doesnt fix that.

like just compare browsers here.

Just multiple easy ways to fingerprint you this doesnt even include apps that ID you.

That is so true! Can’t agree anymore!! That is one of the reasons why I love using it on a router level so even those family members who avoids VPNs like some sort of disease are also using it without their knowledge and I have peace of mind that I am putting my knowledge in the right place.

Haha, I believe anyone can think of that but thanks for your response. I have control over location spoofing all the time on all my remote devices. So I don’t need to worry about it.

Thanks and I agree. The router that I am using is from GL.iNet travel router. It is pretty strong and I get almost 72Mbps speed on 80 Mbps plan. And last month only my home internet traffic was around 2 TB all tunnelled through VPN and I have blocked all non-vpn traffic on router level.

Also, I can see drastic speed improvements with my streaming but never thought that VPN would be the reason behind that.

Thanks for the response. I am actually using Safari on all of my devices and along side that AdGuard protection

Location spoofing is not the only reason to use a VPN.

Also, I can see drastic speed improvements with my streaming but never thought that VPN would be the reason behind that.

could be many reasons , better peering , or your ISP did traffic shaping on streaming traffic as “non prioritized” traffic.

with VPN traffic ISP have often only 2 ways , throttling it or they dont touch it at all because it could be corporate traffic / work traffic.

Ye on IOS sadly because of the forced Browser backend most browsers work the same in this regard  except brave and firefox focus they are sometimes better than the others in different areas

I am using GL.iNet Slate AX travel router

I would prefer functionality over too much privacy. As I use only Apple devices at home, Safari comes in handy to me. I used Firefox Focus in the past and it was good to quickly purge history while closing the browser. But I hardly used to use it. And also most of the time Safari was handy for me, so I started using Private Browsing by default on Safari. Currently, I have the Duckduckgo browser installed on my Mac which I hardly use. But thanks for the suggestion. I will keep that in mind if I change my mind. I tried so hard in the past to switch to Mozilla but it never worked for me seamlessly. Just because I was using Windows and Android devices, I chose to use Chrome by default on them. But as soon as I switched to Apple, I never gave any thought to third-party software, be it Browser Password Manager or Keeping. I developed my digital life and did the same for my girlfriend. We both are happy and somehow I managed to convince my girl about digital hygiene and she is loving it.

On Apple devices it doesn’t make much of a difference like on android or Microsoft devices because ios forces the same shoddy background engines and software for all browsers and similar software it’s all a kind of modified safari.
