Looking back through some older posts, I’ve found similar comments. If I hover over the Nord icon in the taskbar tray (Windows 10 Pro), it says “NordVPN Connected”, but if I then right click on the icon, a window opens with “Not Connected” in red at the top of the window. The map in the application shows that the VPN is connected. This is just a bug, right? Does anyone know of a fix?
I have been reporting the broken taskbar behavior for a while now. They said they are aware of it but will not give a time frame. It started with the 7.17 builds, as it works fine with 7.16.4.0. There have been 14 releases thus far without it fixed, and I started reporting it beginning with 7.17.4.0. Thus far the following all have the broken taskbar behavior.
7.17.3.0
7.17.4.0
7.17.5.0
7.18.2.0
7.18.4.0
7.18.5.0
7.18.6.0
7.19.1.0
7.19.4.0
7.20.2.0
7.20.3.0
7.20.4.0
7.20.5.0
7.21.2.0
Well, as they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you have an email address or contact info I’ll be more than happy to join in your crusade.

They will most likely act like you are stupid with some “Uninstall and reinstall” type nonsense. I’ve suggested they simply roll back the code for the taskbar controls to a pre 7.17 build until they can figure it out, but they replied with some stupidity about “running an old version is unsafe”. 14 releases and they can’t fix the taskbar controls? It’s seriously uncalled for and pathetic.
Understood, but I’ll throw in my 2 cents
I wrote to them and this is there reply:
Thank you for your letter.
At the moment we cannot say whether the issue is widespread or not.
That being said, please perform a leak test by following these steps:
-
Open dnsleaktest.com on your browser while connected to our servers;
-
Take a screenshot of the IP address that is shown after “Hello” on the first page that opens;
-
Click “Extended test”, wait for the test to fully finish, and take a second screenshot of the IP addresses shown in the result.
Please make sure to provide both of the required screenshots.
A guide for taking a screenshot on various systems can be found here:
https://support.nord-help.net/hc/en-us/articles/19684654253585-How-to-take-a-screenshot
Also, please make sure the file is .jpg or .png as we are unable to open other types of formats due to security concerns.
This information will help us identify whether there are any issues with your connection.
Additionally, please follow these steps in order to reset our application’s settings and configurations on your Windows device:
- Right-click our application’s shortcut on Desktop and click on “Open file location”.
- Afterwards, double-click on the folder of your current NordVPN version (e.g. 7.16.3.0).
- Locate “Diagnostics” and launch it.
- Click “Reset app”.
Now the application should reload and you will be asked to log in.
The app launched normally after the last step and both screens indicated it had auto connected.
They had me do the diagnosis and reset and all that stuff too. And it worked… until I reboot. And then only once after a reboot. I had even sent them an email saying the reset fixed it, but minutes later I had to email again and say I guess not.
I’ll keep plugging away.
It seems to have been finally fixed after 4 months and 16 releases later with todays 7.22.2.0 update.
Thanks, I’ll take a look.
I was wrong. Worked again briefly for a while after install, but as usual a reboot or two and it starts to malfunction again.
Still broken after 6 months and 22 release later. LMFAO! I’ve found that it’s directly tied to the theme. If I change the “Appearance” setting from light to dark or vice versa, the taskbar controls start working perfectly fine. But I need to do this every time I reboot or log out of my user account and log back in.
I have informed the worthless monkeys about this so they can finally fix it, but I actually believe they are never going to. They just don’t care. It’s a simple fix, I have told them why it happens, how to reproduce it, how to fix it, etc. and they do nothing. For SIX MONTHS and TWENTY TWO releases so far. All they care about is adding new shit no one cares about instead of fixing what’s broken.
Well…for what it’s worth, at least I appreciate your efforts
