i heard that steam is banned in china since im going to study abroad for a year in china.
my question is that is it safe to log in to steam and not getting banned or hacked?

Tens of millions Chinese use Steam everyday, they don’t even have to buy a VPN. CCP allows people to enjoy western products and services, to some extent. But it is afraid of people connect with outside world directly so the steam community has been banned indeed.
Just make sure you are using the real steam and you should be fine.

You’ll want to get a gaming vpn to play any online games - I recommend qiyou (骑游加速器), they tend to be very reliable, but you’ll need to register your passport through their customer service chat which takes a few days before you can start using it. You don’t NEED it to download games from steam, or to technically play online games, so long as you have a normal VPN, but I’ve found that trying to play online games with a normal VPN gives me like 400 ping compared to a gaming vpn which brings it down to the 50-100 ping range. It costs something like ~250 RMB/year.
As for accessing foreign websites outside of the great fire wall (like Google, Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, etc) I recommend a VPN like astrill. Up until very recently, it has been extremely reliable, and I’m hoping it will get back to its previous reliability soon. Astrill costs a little over $100 USD a year.
The steam store can sometimes be connected and sometimes disconnected. There is no problem with the library and it can be downloaded normally. But the community cannot.
Basically all English websites are banned including this one. Real question is why you don’t read any news and why you think it’s a good idea
Don’t buy Astrill. Search ‘VPNs that work in China’ on this forum or on r/chinalife and get a better one. Astrill is expensive for how bad it actually is. There are much better, cheaper options.

Definitely steam global. Nobody cares about Steam China 蒸汽平台. Most of players consider it as a useless and ironic edition.
You can access your steam library offline, and while technically you can access steam without VPN, it is so unbelievably slow that I wouldn’t exactly consider it viable without vpn or a gaming vpn

I don’t know other games, as a Chiness I have joined some no-Chinese legions in several multiplayer games. We going well with each other, probably because I speak understandable English and I dont cheat.
It’s fine and continues as normal, don’t move the account to China. Play games normally, just online ones will likely require a booster like UU because it’s hard to play with the pings China usually gives
