Is it necessary to use VPN all the time? Especially in mobile, why'd a regular user need it if we take general precautions?

Depends on what you’re doing when tunneling. Like are you torrenting? Or are you accessing content that is not available in your region?

Avoid free VPNs at all costs. Like the saying goes “if the product is free, you’re the product”.

Don’t route all your data through vpn all the time. Use it in an unprotected public wifi and during torrents only.

Go through your vpn provider’s privacy policy and make your decision.

Since most of the torrent sites are blocked, you can use vpn to access them and once you have downloaded the torrent file or opened the magnet link in your torrent downloader client, you can stop the vpn then and there and your torrent will get downloaded even without the vpn.

I have heard people downloading torrents by keeping their VPN switched on or even using tor, after you get your torrent file open in your torrent client, it can’t be blocked the same way ISPs block websites, also you are wasting bandwidth and slowing down the whole network of users using the VPN or tor by using it to download torrents.

You don’t need VPN for your normal browsing but if you are on a public wifi or some one else’s internet you can use VPN as in public wifi quite a lot of websites are blocked to prevent misuse. So it’s up to you, if you want to keep something private (from ISPs who have the record of all your browsing history) you can use VPN to prevent them from doing that.

Not necessary to use VPN all the time. as u/ppatra said use it only when torrenting or using any public wifi. Also avoid free VPN services if you have any sensitive data.

I’m looking for a fast VPN service, especially for torrents, don’t mind paying. I’ve used Zenmate before, but torrent speeds are pathetically slow.

Usually for well seeded torrents, i get 2-3 MBps download speeds without VPN, if any VPN can match those speeds i’m up for it.

VPN all day, erry day. If you are not convinced, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxZa48uVq18

Downvote me all you want, but I’m fucking sick and tired of the “YOU ARE THE PRODUCT” shit. So here goes-

TunnelBear: The best free VPN, good privacy policy. You get 500M/month. Tweet to them asking for more data and you’ll get it.

CyberGhost: Good privacy policy. Very slow, unlimited(afaik, I’ll have to check)

Windscribe: Honestly, don’t know about the privacy policy, but I’ve used it and it’s good enough.

Hola, hotspot shield and others: Stay away from these. They don’t care about privacy.

All listed above are free. A paid VPN is obviously better, PIA is good.

Note: Yes, I get the “YOU ARE THE PRODUCT” argument I see in every comment, but sometimes you just need a decent VPN with a decent policy. The obvious ones like hola and hotspot shield are bad, but a lot of free VPNs are good for the average user.

Sorry to be lame. But why vpn for torrenting?

ProtonVPN?

Been using since the hour they launched and 0 complaints. Good decent speed (streaming 720p content), secure, and easy to setup. Only bad thing is server selection is bad unless you pay. Still, for all my needs, free is perfect rn.

These guys made ProtonMail (Swiss based encrypted email used and trusted by all) so I doubt security is a major concern.

Any good paid service then??

Why torrents??? Do we have some agency in this country enforcing cyber laws effectively ???

Didn’t know that…thanks

Is it safe to use a built-in VPN which a browser like Opera has to download the magnet link? Is it similar to what you have suggested?

For torrents, seedbox is the way to go I guess.

Torrents get downloaded to the seedbox. Then, it gets downloaded to your computer at max speed. And, it does what VPN does without having to suffer slow speeds.

Tunnel bear is paid. It has a free Monthly 500mb thing. If u want to use unlimited data u have to pay.

That’s not being lame. Your IP is public when you are using normal trackers. Some ISPs in the US have been able to track users and send them letters. While this is very unlikely to happen in India, but still.

Used Protonmail… didn’t know they had VPN service

No complains.
