iPhone display 4G/LTE icon when i enable VPN

Something strange is happening when i enable Wireguard VPN on my iPhone.

I am connected to wifi, but as soon as the tunnel is connected, the wifi icon disappears and i get the 4G (LTE) icon in the statusbar of the iPhone.

However when i go to the iPhone settings, i can still see that it is connected to wifi.

I don’t see this behaviour with OpenVPN, it just shows wifi + VPN status symbol as i would have expected to happen with Wireguard also.

Can somebody reproduce this on iOS?

Yes, this bug has been here for years. Any VPN will semi-randomly trigger it.

You can try rebooting, which may or may not fix it.

I get this exact same behaviour on iOS when using OpenVPN. It’s been a bug for years now and just doesn’t seem to get fixed

This happens to me too, but not involving WireGuard. It’s some kind of bug, although using any VPN may be triggering it more often.
