If you ask, culture, food, balabala. What they really think: easy woman & money.
I lived in Shanghai from 2012-2017. I didn’t exactly choose to stay there but I learned so much my time there and wouldn’t have it any other way.
income is very high sir. Also can travel easily in Asia. and in Shanghai you can source everything in terms of food. Singapore is better but its too small and locals are no nice at all. Also the air is very clean now. So why not ?
Most expats enjoy the privilege of being foreigner in China. They can always run back to freedom when its convenient. Also you stand out, and you become very attractive to Chinese girls. It lets people that are losers back home, feel like they are important. 90 percent are male.
cuz it fucking rules lol it’s been one of the most amazing places to live the last two years especially and the last 5 have been some of the best of my life. that being said, yes i would like to leave now lol
Coming from London, which is a fun place to live, important things in life are just better for me here. Teaching in an international school is way more chilled and enjoyable than teaching in a London comp. No longer paying out the ass for London rent as we get an apartment included. Saving on rent, lower taxes and lower living costs mean superb savings potential that we could not dream of while living in England. Have a car now, so covid notwithstanding, we can get out of the city or go somewhere nice. So in summary: money, job more chilled with better work life balance, decent quality of life. Good hub for exploring out of the country, or other parts of China. Enough home comforts to allow you to enjoy why you feel like having. Nice Chinese and international community. Shanghai works well for a lot of people , I am sure.
I know a lot of them are just looking for different experiences
Cuz they have options? If it doesn’t work out in China, they can always go back to the free world.lol
Before covid I always had the option to quit my job and go backpacking in Thailand/Vietnam/etc with a couple thousand dollars in the bank. After covid, that wasn’t an option any more. I had to start saving enough money to cover being unemployed in my home country (western country), which I had never bothered doing before. So I’ve just been staying here to save enough money to be able to quit and leave. It’s almost time.
Bc they thought they could just leave if bad shit happens
People simply want different things and have different goals. Diversity is a good thing. You could ask the same question to many Chinese who move back to China after studying/working abroad for many years. I am a Chinese living in Shanghai as well. I stayed in the US for 8 years, and travelled to a few EU countries. I moved back to China in 2010, when the prospect was a bit different from now. I cannot say I regret it, but if I were to make the decision now I might choose differently. Xi changed a lot of things.
I spent about 10 years of my life in China, partially as a student and partially as an expat.
China has really gone down hill over the past 15 or so years. About 15 years ago, the people were truly open and kind toward foreigners. But slowly over time there is a stronger and stronger anti-foreigner feeling in China. I would say it basically was around Xi Jinping’s rise and the “China Dream”.
Anyways, I came at first because I was intrigued with and fell in love with the culture. I stayed because of the amazing lifestyle both with locals and living among expats. I’m here now just for the fantastic opportunity to make money, but I think I will be leaving soon to settle down and enjoy life.
You can enjoy life in China, but at some point it really starts to feel empty. People here have such a focus on money and face. It is like living in “social media land”, traveling to places just to take a photo to put on your social media instead of really enjoying life.
You also miss the little things, like totally clear blue sky, the stars, serenity of sitting alone, and simple like-minded people.
Money, travel, and career. My company moved me here on a 2-3 year delegation for a specific project. Because of this, they are paying my housing, transportation, etc. I sold my house in the US (it was a starter home anyways so I’d want a bigger/nicer place when I get back, plus housing market meant it gained `~ 20% value since I bought it), so my cost of living is almost zero, coupled with a higher salary for the delegation and I’ll have a nice nest egg when I get back to the US. Travel because, well, I was first offered this position before COVID and was supposed to be here in 2020 (but just now got here in January) and obviously at that point travel was open. Career because it is an excellent move with once-in-a-lifetime experience from the project perspective and its basically a requirement in my company to do an international assignment if you want to become an executive.
As a European living in China, Europe sucks big time. Cloths, food everything is fricking expensive. And Europe is in the Stone Age with things like ordering food online, paying with your phone…
As someone who really enjoyed their experience in China and got stranded outside permanently during Covid, it was the money, the low cost of living, the convenience, the travel and the cultural experiences.
I came to China for money, teaching in a kindergarten is relatively easy and the lunch break is long. I save more than double the amount I would back home. You have financial security and thats a good feeling. A high quality of life because you can get food, massages and dating is good too.
Because black people are being killed like flies in Brazil for decades, each 23 minute a black person in cold murdered and fascism is ascending, not just here, but all over the western, so no, thank you, I have this thing with staying alive
To answer your question, you say that you want to get out, well I can assure you that in any place on this earth that you or other Chinese want to go to or have already been living in, there will be people that will want to get out from. There is no one single context for everyone. Stay safe.
Honestly the only thing bad about China is the government and it’s followers so why do you wanna get out?
Because white people are revered in China. The average joe could go to China and get treated like a celebrity. I’d go to China to fk tons of chicks if I m white lol.
可惜洋大人不如共产主义的铁拳了啊 呵呵。
Jokes aside, China is great to have a life as long as you have the insurance (foreign citizenship) because you can leave if things go south. Foreigners have that.
