My friend’s received letters from their ISP before and suggested I use a VPN to download torrents. But how would one hook up a vpn service to my Qnap NAS? I have the
Open the QVPN Service app (may need to install), under VPN Client (left), select VPN connection profiles. Click add to add a new profile. This will ask for a file that should be available from your VPN provider. I logged into my provider’s site, searched and downloaded it. There are going to be two files needed from your provider (at least if you’re using openvpn). Continue filling in the information. Once the profile is added, right click in the list to edit it. Fill in/select more options and sign-in credentials as needed. Test to see if you can connect. (Also be careful because each port will need to be set up independently if memory serves.)
I like to ssh in and use the command line to verify this is all working even if it says connected. I’ve found this command to work (this should match what is reported in the GUI):
“curl ipinfo.io/ip”
Using this setup and choosing the option to allow other clients on the network to access the VPN, you can point the device at to your qnap server (router/gateway address) and it will get routed via the same VPN connection. I tested this using a raspberry pi and it worked as described.
Anyhow I found it pretty easy to do.
In Download Station settings, there is a tab “BT”, and there go to a “Proxy” section. You can use SOCKS5 proxy (TorGuard supports it), just make sure to check “only download using a proxy connection”. This will ensure that when you can’t connect to proxy your downloads will stop.
I’ve seen this question a thousand times… If you want to do it right, go buy a DD-WRT router or better yet a pfsense firewall and setup the VPN on one of them. Tons of tutorials online and you have control of which devices go over the VPN and which don’t.
I have used the router solution /u/ajass mentions and that works good when setup with selective routing. I would recommend setting binex deluge-vpn client in Container Station. With this solution you don’t have to run all your QNAP traffic through the VPN, only your torrent client. Once you discover the things you can do in Container Station and Docker you won’t want to use anything else.
Totally overkill if OP only wants to route Torrent downloading through VPN.
The router choice is fair enough if you want to route every single connection from your house (which everyone should, but that is a matter to discuss other day).
In the specific OP case, he probably will do perfectly fine with a transmission + VPN docker. No need to invest in a new router!
most routers i’ve seen are not powerful enough to run all traffic through a vpn without sever drop in bandwidth.
Yeah I agree with this. I use QVPN service only when torrenting. I have an asus router that supports VPN but I myself and other family members play online games and using PIA VPN that destroys ping. Also, netflix wont allow video streaming on VPN as well so not really a good option unless u have 2 wifi and like one individually for VPN.
TBH, is not that routers are not powerful enough, is that OpenVPN due the way it works, will produce a sensible speed drop.
In my case, when connecting the nearest server, I’m getting a drop from 300Mbps to around 70Mbps (using my own computer to route the connection, not the router).
VPN = Speed down (by a lot), but that’s a cheap payment for helping to keep your privacy.
Netflix don’t allow VPN? But AFAIK, VPN IP geolocation was one one the main features why people used them, precisely to access Netflix from other countries!
Yup I’m from Australia and used to use US VPN for it because the American one has more shows. But they caught up with it and doesn’t work anymore, at least not with PIA VPN.
Oh, ok. I suppose it’s simply a server ban then. That’s the problem with well known services as PIA.
