How do I access government websites with a vpn? It won't let me log in to do taxes

I’m trying to log into the Oregon revenue website with a vpn to file some tax documents, but it won’t let me. It says something like “You’ve tried to log in too many times in the last hour”, after my first click. I’m just using a basic vpn paid subscription. What kind of VPN do I need? Would a dedicated IP fix the issue or is it something else?

  1. turn off vpn you are using a secure channel and you shouldn’t be worrying about security
  2. if you insist on using VPN, use a dedicated one.

If you’re using a shared exit point, then its likely that IP is getting throttled by the Tax site because it sees a lot of activity coming from it. Probably multiple customers or better yet multiple people are trying to probe for weaknesses, and there’s multiple failed login attempts coming from that IP. A common counter to bruteforce type attacks is to institute throttling measures. It might not stop them, but will slow them down and frustrate them.

You’re probably just piling on with the bad guys. Change your exit point, and see if you get the same thing.

Dedicated IP will work

How do I get around this?

Yes, I need a VPN, otherwise I can’t access it at all.

If I turn it off, I can’t access the website at all.

Could you explain this in non-tech language, lol? Which service do I need to buy in order to access it?

If you don’t know how to change your IP with a VPN service, then you’re probably a struggle bus as it is. You shouldn’t need to use a VPN to file your taxes. If you are worried about the government seeing your true IP address, and somehow using that against you to prove you filed your taxes or some other nonsense then you’re probably doing something other than filing your taxes.
