I’m trying to connect my Roku to my home computer. I have the Roku app installed and it is asking for the server address. I see my server name on my computer but when i enter it on the roku it says “server not found, is it online?”. I’m extremely new to this so any help will be much appreciated.
If you don’t have any DNS service running on your LAN to resolve that “server name” then you need to use the actual IP address, and don’t forget to add the “:8096” at the end.
So enter the IP address on my computer? If i’m using a vpn do I enter the IP of the server I’m connected to or my normal ip?
Enter the IP address of the machine that has the Jellyfin server running into the Roku. You don’t want to use the IP address provided by your VPN provider, because that would mean your Jellyfin connection would have to go out to the Internet at large and back into your network, assuming you had a VPN that would allow incoming traffic.
I just got. I was entering the wrong IP address. I was using the IP from whatsmyipaddress. I would have never realized what I was doing wrong. Thanks for the help.
We’re in the process of sorting the auto-discovery stuff, so hopefully in the near future any Jellyfin servers on your local network will be selectable from a list, without having to enter IP addresses.
