Incredibly low download speed, no matter the protocol or server I use. And I have purchased VPN plus for a month. Can somebody please help? It’s pretty much unusable, under 1 mb/s, closer to around 200kb/s a lot of the time
Facing the same issue here for the past few days now
I’ve also noted slower than normal throughput, but still getting around 270mbps down according to speedtest.net, speed.cloudflare.com and openspeedtest.com. This is using the ProtonVPN client on Win11, all the defaults and quick connect to the fastest server. Normally I would get 400+ mbps while connected with these settings.
I’ve also tried connecting via the OpenVPN client on Linux and can’t seem to get above 100mbps that way, but the ProtonVPN client on Linux gives the same results noted above.
Hi, i was testing proton vpn free for the last days, because my f’in provider decided to limit download speed for rapidgator to 5 MB/s.
With proton i got full 60MB/s and was very happy to buy vpn plus - but then i noticed the speed dropped to 200KB/s (not only in jdownload but on every other website as well).
Is this a common problem?
I dont want to buy an account only to have speed issues again…
I am based in Europe/Austria
Thx!
Hoping we find a fix
Any idea why I’m getting less than 1mbps download ? Kind of frustrated considering I paid to get fast download speed and this is practically unusable
Where are you located? I’m in the US using the fastest US server. My ISP speed is 800 Mbps. With ProtonVPN, I just tested at 555Mbps which is normal here. So you’re getting your normal tier speed when not connected to the VPN but severely degraded performance with the VPN? No chance this is an ISP issue?
This may happen on a free server occasionally, but not on the paid ones, as our paid server network is using 10Gbps uplinks: Pricing | Proton VPN.
How did you test it?
In the USA, in northern NJ. I get 500mbps from my ISP. It varies drops a little during peak hours, but I still get over 450mbps raw. Enable ProtonVPN using smart protocol selection (usually Wireguard) to the fastest server (usually in NYC) used to get me around 400-430mbps in either Windows or Linux on bare metal or in a VM (I do most of my work in VM’s). Just recently I’ve noticed my average throughput through the ProtonVPN client dropped to around 270mbps.
And using the OpenVPN client never gets me more than 100mbps, typically in the 30-50mbps range lately.
Do you have any idea why I may be getting less than 1mbps download when I can normally get up to 500mbps? Such a dradtic difference. I’ve tried many many servers and all four protocols. I’m lost
Thx for the fast answer
Well it happened to me last night, and I’m a paid user. Down speed reduced to 5Mbps from 100, and up speed to 2Mbps from 10, on all Greek servers, on both windows and android. Switched off vpn, got full speed. Switched on again, same problem. I don’t know how long it lasted, but it lasted long enough for me to do about 10 speed tests back and forth and eventually give up and keep it disabled on both windows and android.
I think it was just the website I was using tbh with you. Using different sites gives me variable speeds but better than 1mbps. Using Steam itself gives me good DL speed so I think it was just a lack of understanding on my end on how some file sharing sites handle their download speeds
Fast.com is my go-to
Gotcha. Yeah sorry I don’t have any answers. Hopefully the Proton people have some clues. I’d be interested in their brainstorming for future reference myself.
Hi! This clearly not right. Could you reach our customer support so that they can help you debugging the situation? (You can do it directly from the app itself)
That’s quite odd. Please contact us through the ‘Report an issue’ option in the Proton VPN app menu (How to report an issue in Proton VPN | Proton VPN) and attach the error logs in your report after you experience this drop in speed, so our technical support team can investigate further and help you troubleshoot accordingly.
You can only pull it down as fast as they can send it up
I’ll be honest with you, I think it was the site I was downloading from specifically. Because I still seem to be able to get full download speed from steam (but I am going to double check this later) as well as get 5mbps from another file hosting site. I will update this later if I find a way to verify for sure. Thank you for your comment !
