Google Chrome Showing my real IP address despite VPN

I recently purchased NordVPN and last weekend, I downloaded some stuff off the torrents. Before I did though, I checked IP Magnet to be sure that my Ip address did change. After confirming that my IP address was different, I downloaded torrents.

Today, out of curiosity, I went onto Google Chrome Incognito and with the VPN on, I checked my Ip address and in Incognito it showed my real IP address. Then I went back to regular google and it showed the VPN address.

I then checked my IP address in Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge and they all show my real IP address in these programs! I’m not sure what’s going on and if Nord is working. Why is this happening? I’ll also note that I have the Nord VPN extension on Chrome turned on as well as the Nord Application turned on too.

TLDR: My real Ip address shows in Google Chrome Incognito and other internet browsers despite VPN.

Edit: I figured out the problem, I had split tunneling feature enabled which I turned off and now everything is working normally. Thank you all for your help!

I’ll also note that I have the Nord VPN extension on Chrome turned on

Web browser extensions do nothing for your torrent downloads. Disable/uninstall that extension & test again. Everything should show up with the VPN’s IP address with just the VPN client alone, no weird browser extensions needed.

Offhand sounds like you installed your full VPN client incorrectly and/or forgot to enable it.

Otherwise maybe talk to that VPN service’s support in case it’s just their service or software being crap.

Nord is the worst VPN for many reasons. Use Mullvad or something else.

What site are you using to check your IP Address? It’s possible the site is using javascript or webrtc to get your real IP address. If that’s the case it won’t matter what VPN you’re using.

Try turning off JavaScript and seeing what it happens. You can use uMatrix or NoScript to block javascript. uBlockOrigin has a feature that will block webrtc from leaking you IP address too.

If your only concern is just downloading torrents though make sure your client is bound to the VPN’s virtual networking interface if possible.

It could be a DNS leak. You can check this tool to see what information you are likely leaking when browsing the web - https://browserleaks.com

Disable webrtc. Use chrome extension to achieve this

Lol, everyone sh!ting on Nord when it was none of the above, and it still achieved the real purpose and blocked any copyright trackers from seeing your real IP it sounds. I honestly have no idea why anyone would want to surf the web with a VPN anyway. It makes no sense. It still inherently NOT private and you can’t decrypt https traffic anyway even if someone hypothetically old school MITM’d you. VPN for torrents I obviously completely understand, luckily it worked for that purpose.

I considered Mullvad before i got Nord. Thanks

sometimes you wouldnt want to reveal IP in browsers or other applications.
Instead of Tor people expect some level of privacy with exposing the IP.
