Geoblocked appletv but not iphone / ipad

May or may not be the right forum for this but hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the root cause of my issue, if not the solution

I subscribe to a streaming app that is geoblocked in certain regions (hint - cars go vroom)

I have set my apple tv up on a vpn using my asus router and nord ovpn profiles (tried multiple countries). Outcome is it detects that i am in a geo blocked location. I have confirmed through another app (speedtest) that i connect to a server in the country so vpn definitely works.

If i use nord app on either iphone or ipad, it works without issue. Same vpn country, wifi, house, everything.

Why would this be? Driving me potty.

Mobile devices have in-built location tracking services that don’t rely on your IP address to determine location, and streaming or other location-sensitive services can get your real location from the device itself. The Apple TV (and other streaming devices) doesn’t have in-built location and relies on IP for location, so they can be tricked by VPNs.

Thank you for the reply.

Wouldn’t that suggest it should be the phone / ipad that gets blocked and not the apple tv?

The vpn and stream, works on the iphone / ipad with nord app

It doesn’t work on apple tv, connected to the vpn through asus router. (Confirmed it is connected to nord server through speedtest)

I can’t work out why that would be

I’m sorry, I read your post exactly backwards!

Sorry but I can’t think of any reason this setup would work on iOS devices but not the Apple TV. I do know that Netflix and other streaming services routinely identify the IPs used by Nord and other VPNs and essentially geoblock those IPs, but that should create a geoblock on ALL of your devices. Very strange.

Ok thanks anyway. It’s so frustrating, even if i knew why it wouldn’t be so bad.
I was wondering if it could be a DNS thing

The other alternative is because you download a profile from nord to install on the router that has an ip that is static and been flagged. Whereas the app is a bit more dynamic in setting its ip addresses.

I could be talking complete rubbish tho
