FYI on iPhone upgrades - your subscription to proton VPN does not transfer even if you bought a year subscription. Apple and Proton have been unhelpful for months

Just a heads up to anyone looking to upgrade phones, I’ve lodged complaints with receipts to both proton and apple and they refuse to do anything to restore my access I purchased through Apple Pay. Confirmed with two of my recent upgrades, work and personal.

Can’t say I’ll buy access again moving forward but hope this helps someone avoid this in the future!

Typically there is a “restore purchase” option when buying something through an App.

Also paying for Proton doesn’t seem like a valid option in their website or in the app itself. Something doesn’t add up right here.

I’ve upgraded multiple devices and been able to carry over multiple subscriptions.
Both android and iOS in the past, although I’ve been on Android for 2-3 years now.

There’s missing details here.
The subscriptions are tied to your apple ID. To utilize Proton you need a Proton account.

Are you saying that you had the subscription active on one iPhone, bought a new iPhone and using the exact same Apple ID and Proton account, Apple is telling you that no, you do not have that subscription?

Because that is difficult to believe.

You can log in to the iCloud account and see subscriptions and purchases. Current and previous.
So you’re saying that you had a subscription, bought a new phone and poof you no longer have the subscription on your iCloud account?
Does it show you ever had one or purchased one?

Sounds like an apple issue not a proton issue. Just pay for it on their website and there isn’t any issues

Exactly. Restoring purchases was the first thing I tried. I couldn’t pay on their website either… so wack

Yes that’s exactly it.

Exact same Apple ID and proton account for the respective devices, albeit different Apple ID’s and proton accounts for each phone.

I can see the subscription as current through Apple and have the receipt email. So shows I purchased and confirmed with email but neither is willing to restore access. Proton says it’s an Apple issue and Apple implied it’s a proton issue

Yeah I’m sure it’s fine paying through proton but included the Apple Pay aspect in my description for a reason.

This was just a psa for anyone anticipating paying with Apple Pay which is a far easier process

I looked on proton vpn App on my phone and I can’t change my subscription at all through it, I have to login to webpage and access my account to do so. Something doesn’t seem right with how you’re trying to approach this problem.

Having the same issue now myself :sob:

Sorry misspoke- I see the pay option on proton web but no ability to restore purchase access through proton

I don’t think Proton uses Apple as a payment processor so are you sure you bought a Proton subscription?

yes I am

I paid more for ProtonVPN on the App Store. It’s also listed as a subscription renewal on my iPhone.

Huh TIL that they accept Apple Pay. Well glad I was of no help
