Extension that engages a VPN when and only when I access certain websites?

Not sure if an extension like this even exists, hence the question …

I want an extension that starts a VPN only for certain websites.

Let’s say I access ‘abcde(dot)com’ the extension does nothing. If I access ‘xyz(dot)com’ the extension starts the vpn for that website, and that website only.

Any suggestions?

By essence a VPN is setup on the system, not in browser, so its for all connexions.
Minus split tunneling features ofc

“VPN addons” are nonsense and should be avoided like plague unless they come from well known vpn providers.

It should be possible using multi-account containers in Firefox. You need an addon to open some domains in specific containers, and another addon to configure VPN/proxy settings for that container.

I know its possible because I wrote my own extension to do it, but its not something I can publish.

Why. I’ve used windscribe for Firefox for ages. It’s been just fine. What could make a vpn and it being an extension incompatible?

  • Extension is for browser
  • Vpn is system wide.

And many “vpn extension” are just snake oil or disguised malwares

Where in the definition of vpn does it mandate it being system wide? It’s a proxy. It could either route traffic from just a browser. Or from across the system…

Sure you are right.
Not really a definition, just the common and “normal use” in my opinion. In the spirit.
I mean isn’t a VPN overkill just for browsing? And split tunneling may take time and could be complicated to setup.

Take it the other way. If you need that only for your browser, you may need a simple proxy only. And if that so, why would you need a extension when you just need to meddle with Firefox proxy settings ? You could use an open source extension to switch proxy, like idk , FoxyProxy?

For OP safety i think it would be better to leave the VPN as it is. If its VPN does not offer splitting settings he shouldn’t mess with extensions like that. I wouldnt let a non official extension mess with my VPN anyway. I’d rather tell people not to trust vpn browser extension (which is kinda true), and that VPN are NOT meant to just be proxies just for browsers that going full techie and says “you know there is split tunneling”, see them fail at config and compromise their security or privacy.

Depending on what op want a simple proxy is enough. Or changing dns may be enough for circumventing govt censorship.

Because I didn’t know this exists. I’ll look into it, thank you

I’m not sure what you mean by this. The Windscribe extension is legit and first party afaik

No. Those solutions are not as simple to set up. That guy is an idiot who thinks he is smart. I use adguard vpn that only activates on two news sites that i need american versions for. but free is limited to 3GB per month.
