ESET vs Kaspersky vs Bitdefender

Hello,
So as the title subjet, I am hesitating between theses threes antivirus.
Also I would like some suggestions of some solid back up option.
I’m soon to work on a new computer and I havnt kept in touch with the whole anti virus thing, neither the back up options. I’m also considering bitwarden for password management, is that a good option ?
Thanks in advance !

Hello,

I am not going to get into a “which is best” discussion when it involves my employer’s software because that would be unethical, but to answer your non vendor-related questions here is a a link to a blog post and paper I wrote about options for backing up one’s computer: Backup Basics

Now, it is a bit out of date in terms of the capacities and costs of storage since it is over a decade old, but other than that it should provide a good primer on getting started with backups.

They are all good at antivirus defense.

I’ve been using ESET for a number of years, and Kaspersky prior to that. I’ve also installed Bitdefender every so often to see what’s going on with it as it always seems to be #1 on all the antivirus lists. My summary is:

  • ESET: has a small footprint, so very light on system resources. Lots of options to switch things off, or make configuration changes. Nothing bad to say.
  • Bitdefender: really heavy on system resources. Had problems with it interacting with my VPN provider. Update process seems cumbersome as once installed it’s still updating other components that each require restarting. Maybe its because it’s just so bloated.
  • Kaspersky: Used it in the past and had no issues. Not sure if I’ll use it now since it’s Russian software and all the antitrust issues leaking about.

Best thing to do is install them all and try them out.

All good options. I’d go for Kaspersky, but trial them and see what you prefer.

I use a NAS for my backups (and media centre).

Bitwarden is a great password manager.

They’re all good options, however I personally prefer Kaspersky, and it’s served me very well for as far back as I can remember. They’ve managed to stay at the forefront of top tier protection for so many years, which is no easy task in this space. Fair on resources, out of the way, etc., etc. Good option overall as when it comes to this stuff… I prefer to configure it and not have to worry again (set it and forget it).

As far as password management, BitWarden is a great option, my current preference. I tried LastPass and 1Password, however BitWarden hit a nice mix of simplicity, usability, and just worked well overall.

Any of those three will serve you well.

Regarding all that have been said, Kaspersky seems to be the most popular option, eset second and bitdefender third.
Question tho, all that is said about Kaspersky, let’s assume it’s real, what kind of impact will that have on any of us ? Like…What could they realisticaly do ? Track our data usage ? Spam us with malware if the war goes ballistics ? I mean…I fail to see how Kaspersky being russian is a problem right now. And all the report made previously by other country seems to be more political than technical. So… What should I Believe ?
Also, what are the main differences between thoses three antivirus ? Thanks !

I cant believe people are still using Kaspersky in 2023

Thanks for the link above shall look into it.

opinion on malwarebytes?

I found that Kaspersky made my audio inputs unusable. Made microphones skip every half second as if they had a gated effect on them. Very unfortunate as it was the best AV I’ve ever tried

Which of the three do we use on Android?

Subscription is no problem!

theyre all a bit different, bitdefender i think is the cheapest, its romania based and has the least options for simplest users with good protection, kaspersky ive seen is more of a resource hog, and ive heard it has the best protection on the market and has more options, but it is russia based, so that and the performance would be the only reasons i would get it, and eset is pretty low profile with a lot of options for the engine, slovakia based so less chance of getting fucked by russia, and protection comparable to kaspersky, so thats what im using for good protection while gaming without clogged cpu from an antivirus. i obviously dont know if kaspersky is like controlled by the russian government, but im still not risking giving this much power over my computer or phone to potentially the russia

I wouldn’t go around asking for someone to confirm my xenophobic paranoia but thats just me personally

whats wrong with kaspersky

Is there a Macrium version for Apple Macs ?

Malwarebytes is really good, you don’t need to worry about it. I used Malwarebytes since 2014. I don’t recommend their browser’s extension. The most important part is the user how do you handle it? All Antivirus software is never gonna be 100%. If you want to know more go to the DEF CON a hacker convention held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada. https://defcon.org/ or Learn from them.
