I’ve tried most of the Plus servers, and Netflix detects all of them as VPNs and refuses to load the videos (and it doesn’t do that with some well-known free university VPNs, so it’s likely not my PC or browsers). Did anyone have any success recently with Netflix Japan? I know it’s a very special region of Netflix because in Japan data center and home internet IP ranges are very clearly defined and Netflix, most likely, only accepts home IPs, but I assumed that Proton listed support for Japan for a reason.
I wrote to support of course. NF JP is the primary reason for me to use a VPN service — as the university ones aren’t the fastest and most stable ones out there, being free and all — so it’s kind of a deal breaker for me if it won’t work.
A bit ago (couple weeks - month?) I also tried to watch something via Netflix Japan and it didn’t work.
VPN is not enough to geo spoof Netflix in Japan. You’ll need Proxy service and some other things you better not discus or ask for on Reddit.
Have you tried any actually region-locked shows? Netflix apparently lets you watch globally available shows even behind a VPN and tends to hide local shows if it detects a VPN.
I’ve been testing with this anime: https://www.netflix.com/watch/81234294 (Bofuri)
For the purpose of hiding your IP address (and thus geolocation), a VPN and a Proxy do the same thing. The only “other things” you could do is spoofing your physical location (many different ways depending on browser/platform), which is pointless since Netflix doesn’t use it, or using an account with a payment method in a different country in combination with a VPN, however, except for within the EU, the account location doesn’t seem to matter as far as I know.
