I’ve been stuck on May security update and have been patiently waiting for the June update to arrive but after “VPN by Google One” stopped working today I sideloaded the OTA (phone now identifies as having June 5 security update) and I don’t see “VPN by Google” anywhere and “VPN by Google One” is still the system VPN. Just wondering if anyone on Pixel 7 has anything yet and if they had to do any magic incantations or other voodoo to summon the VPN. I suspect it has not been released at all for Pixel 7 and there’s a second June OTA in the works (probably why the previous one had not been pushed yet).
Edit: I tried an old XDA trick to force Google Play Services to update and it worked. Find Google Play Services in Settings > Apps and delete all data then let it resync itself. After I did that VPN by Google came in as an update in Play Store. It also started enrollment in Google’s Find My network.
That’s what I thought I had heard from a while ago, but the Google page about it now says it’s coming as a “system update” and doesn’t mention anything about play store.
Through a system update in June 2024, Pixel enables VPN by Google, a built-in VPN, for Pixel 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Fold.
I tried an old XDA trick and deleted Google Play services data and then let it resync. After I did that, then VPN by Google was available as update in Play Store.
I genuinely cannot stand this piece of shit phone because Google is always messing up the features I paid for when I bought this phone and is somehow able to get away with it.
Conveniently activated/deactivated via the notification pulldown. Doesn’t trip those infuriating captchas when searching Google, like other VPNs do. Can be configured not to block Android Auto wireless.
Hey what’s the trick you used? I’m having the exact same problem. I tried deleting google play services data but it’s been an hour since I did it and I still don’t have a VPN by google app.
I tried accessing it through the tips menu like some people say but every time I tap “get started” on the section with the VPN it just doesn’t take me anywhere.
I’ve used Pixels for years, and I love them, but with Google always killing off their own products or taking away their functionality, I’m very seriously considering just jumping ship to the iPhone and getting rid of all of my Google Home speakers and displays.
What I did earlier today before making this post (may or may not be relevant). My phone has been stuck on May security update so I manually updated it to June (this is called an OTA sideload). After doing that nothing changed. Play Store (Manage apps& device) showed no updates all day and even immediately prior to the next steps. Someone clarified the update comes via Play Store and not OTA update so I tried the old hack from XDA.
XDA hack for kicking Play Store services in the butt:
Go to settings
Search “Google Play services”
Select the “App info” result
Select “Storage & cache”
Clear storage and clear cache
Wait for phone to stop being angry and hot (~10ish min)
Open Play Store and see Play Store is signed in and acting normal again
Go to “Manage apps & device” and check for updates
Actually my pixel is now my second phone that I still use every other day, I jumped ship to iPhone 4 months ago and it’s just a much better phone all around imo. I had to get used to some things and yea I do miss some things from my old pixel but that doesn’t matter if google wants to treat the customer base like beta testers.
Just fyi if you do plan on jumping ship there are some things that takes a minute to get used to on iPhone like how notifications work but my 15 pro max is an amazing phone that works when I need it to.
