Do VPNs keep track of the sites I visit? How do they know that I have reached my bandwith limit (tunnelbear)?

Do VPNs keep track of the sites I visit? How do they know that I have reached my bandwith limit (tunnelbear)?

They certainly have the ability to, but most insist they do not. You can trust them or not.

They could also track bandwidth without logging specific sites, so it could be fine, but again it comes down to trust. I’m guessing you’re using a free VPN? Any decent (paid) VPN won’t limit bandwidth. Spend the $3-5/mo.

They don’t need to log content to see how much bandwidth you used. They can’t claim to be completely logless though.

I think some VPNs doesn’t log like PIA (private internet access). I’m using zenvpn and I had no troubles so far.

Good question! We count the packets of data going through our network to determine how much data has been used, however this doesn’t require us to record ANY kind of activity. TunnelBear has a very strict no-logging policy. See here for more details - A Privacy Policy You Can Actually Understand | TunnelBear

Their network interface(s) records bandwidth use.

Yes, they log everything you connect to. They do this to cover their owner’s asses, and also… from their perspective, why not? Especially if they are charging money for it.

Can someone help? It won’t let me submit a post yet: Hello, I had been using my giant Tunnelbear just fine to view a popular streaming site. Since I updated it yesterday (not sure if related) it won’t load this website from any other location than my actual location any more. I have checked my IP and it’s always from the correct tunnel, I have tried older versions. Can someone please help me? Haven’t heard back from TB yet. Thanks!

This is defiantly not true in regards to TunnelBear! We have a fierce (Rawr!) no-logging policy (see:A Privacy Policy You Can Actually Understand | TunnelBear). At no point, under any circumstances will TunnelBear log the activity of our users.

The real question is, does your data center keep a record?

This is why I unsubbed from here. It’s just a giant marketplace for VPN’s and as such is incredibly biased in regards to informing people about something very important. Shame on you.

I state a fact that is just utterly true if you ever read any cyber security related news. People get busted all the time by the authorities for using VPN’s all the time.
