CyberGhost VPN - avoid it

CyberGhost seem a bit iffy to me.

Jurisdiction: a lot of what they do is supplied by M247 including their DNS - a UK (5-eyes / echelon) based company (info gained from leak tests, IP info).

Logging: They are logging hardware info, see near end of this article:

And I got ‘surveyed’ by them and they asked some odd questions something like did I use the VPN for illegal purposes! And did I use encrypted communications which is a really stupid question considering HTTPS and VPN, and it was multiple choice of 4-5 different encrypted comm’s types but the stupid thing wouldn’t let me choose none of them!!!

And sometimes the VPN would silently change from one country VPN server to my own country VPN server without any kind of notification that it’d done so.

So, I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone, also because they seem to use the same IPs for their free service which means you get to share IP addresses that have been abused and flagged all over the place. Mainly this means the occasional forum won’t let you post and you get hit much harder by google’s new annoying captcha systems, sometimes even just on a basic search, occasionally a webpage will even refuse to display.

And torrents go slow and web pages get stuck not loading for too many seconds - same websites are instant without VPN. And the longer you’re connected, the slower it seems to go, even have trouble watching youtube at 720p and above at times.

Summary: avoid like the plague.

Probably try NordVPN next, PrivatVPN was ok but they seemed too amateurish / poor security.

PS, just had to **** about with google captcha, 3 sets of image tiles, thanks cyberghost.

PS, useful resource:

Never had any of these issues.

Also. it’s a massive memory hog, why in ****s name does a VPN need literally billions of bytes of memory?

And another thing, the interface treats you like a complete idiot, the options don’t make much sense other than from the point of view of someone trying to sell CyberGhost to people who don’t understand technology. An example of this is these Six choices of which you can select one only:

Pick one only:

  • Surf Anonymously
  • Unblock Streaming
  • Protect Network(x)
  • Torrent Anonymously
  • Unblock Basic Websites
  • Choose My Server

(x) Massive irony is that Cyberghost MUST have the Windows Server service running and it leaves the server ports open and it also bypasses windows firewall. So if/when hackers ever find a way to exploit windows server then you’re likely going to get owned very fast (minutes) by a worm.

thanks for the advice!! I just uninstalled it because i ended up getting emails from Charter that I was downloading illegal music

So I did change to nordVPN, they’re ok but not perfect, I find it bizarre that the software insists on keeping logs on your PC so not exactly a compete no logs system.

It messed up my computer. It was a nightmare to unsubscribe. It’s purposely set up to make it very difficult so they keep charging you. Your subscription info is hidden in their logo and their “help” isn’t any help at all. Again to keep charging you. A lot of their links are broken. It’s very slow. I’ve had it switch locations on me a few times. I signed up for the Romanian product and got the England one. Avoid them. These posts are 5 years old, yet not much has changed except for getting worse.
