CONFIRMED: VyprVPN is throttling traffic

I’ve used VyprVPN for years, but recently noticed the data rates have fallent through the floor. I tested this recently by transfering files. I have a 100MB/s connection. When transferring it was at 8MB/s. Good enough I figure, however after a couple minutes it dropped to <1MB/s. I tried other servers and they all behaved the same way. I decided to continue to transfer at this rate anyways. Several hours later it dropped to <400KB/s, and now it’s <20KB/s. This is easily replicable across all servers.

I tested other VPN services and do not see this behavior!

Why is VyprVPN throttling traffic!?!?

I thought it was just me. My latest problem is that my HTTP traffic is blocked while connected to the VPN. I have torrent traffic but no HTTP.

PS: Here is a funny addition, the Customer Success persons name was “Seth”…can i say that? Oh listen he was brilliant and i just want to say that, But it took all my gruel not to go down the “Seth from Customer Success” route. Like when trying a fix and it dont work and you blurt out “Ahh, that sucks Seth” and he says “no its not it didnt work”…ok, i go now, to naughty hospital, admit myself, 2 weeks. thank you

Hello, I just come from speaking with a Vypr “customer success” person. Why was I wasting valuable life seconds doing that, you may well ask, well, simply put, with no VPN, 892mbps. With VPN 126mbps. Now, I realise that there is a cost of squeezing all my porn, sorry data, yes data, squeezing all my data through a machine that makes it into fairy dust and that cost is drop out in terms of speed, but holy shit mother of all things computers, 766mbps? Thats one hell of a toll. Are they stealing my super sonic speed and sellling this speed to other 3rd world internet countries like the USA for example? Jussss kidding.

I bet you cant guess what the 1st stage solutions were that were emailed to me,??

Switch everything off, wait 10 seconds, now, switch everything back on…!!

Im gonna have to do some work now and find another vpn, arrrrggghh, this is my life.

Thank you , good night.

Update: No idea why they are doing this. I see some VyprVPN reps are responding to this subreddit. Can you comment what’s going on here?

I tested this across many of your servers and observed this exact behavior. Spoke w/ my ISP and confirmed they aren’t throttling VPN. Didn’t see this issue other VPNs I tested. It’s only your service. It starts out fast then rapidly drops. Doesn’t matter what I transfer (e.g., steam apps or something else). I use wireguard.

Wow… thanks for calling this out. I was checking out VPNs and started going through reddit. VyprVPN was interesting but this doesn’t vibe well at all. Had no idea that some VPNs have crappy link speeds.
If anyone has a decent VPN hit me up.

Hello!

We don’t throttle connection speeds, but we apologize if you’ve been experiencing less-than-satisfactory speeds when using our service.

Our team is always making optimizations to VyprVPN to ensure a world-class experience.

Have you tried restarting your network equipment? Restarting network equipment could potentially clear up some issues that might exist between your location and our servers.

If you continue to see issues with your connection, please contact us directly - Submit a request – VyprVPN Support

yah vyprVPN is quite sketch

I checked out express and Nord. It seems decent. I’m going to try to work out the vyprVPN issues but if the responses from this do_troll guy is any indication, I suspect vyprVPN is a lost cause.

i use vypr and its been fine for me, dont know if it was a problem 3 months ago because i wasnt using my computer much but as of now its fine for me

Thanks. Yes I restarted my equipment., computer etc… I see this on other computers. I don’t see this issue with other VPNs.

Thanks for the info.

This varies, but typically happens within just a few minutes. Other VPNs, and non-VPN have no issues.

I’m quite familar w/ benchmarking. I observed this BW reduction both with the website speed-tests (I assume this doesn’t use the disk), and also direct file copies (downloads). The speed-test websites show the reduction for download and uploads. It’s seen across all servers. Some servers take longer before thw BW reduction kicks in.

Also I have NVMe SSDs. They can do like 4000MB/s so I doubt that would slow down the transfer.

I thought perhaps my ISP is throttling, but since other VPNs do not show this problem I ruled it out. Really the only source I can come up with is VyprVPN. I read online some others are experiencing this issue. The real test would be to create another account and see if they are throttlign specific users. I barely use VyprVPN (maybe once a month) so would be super surprised if I got targeted.

I’ve read other subs and websites. VyprVPN consistency comes up as having slower performance than other VPNs. Some exampels here:

“VyprVPN performance proved epically bad”

There’s many more if you search for it.

“I use pinginfoview for this…”. I use ping-test which is relatively accurate as well. However, note the issue I’m looking into is a bandwidth issue, and not a latency issue. Although I assume that is spiking as well when these poor performance issues occur.

The fact is I suspect VyprVPN is doing the following:

  1. They have a capacity issue and are oversubscribing their user base. Some servers, namely west coast and east coast are saturated and the BW plummets accordingly.

  2. They are cherry picking users to “throttle” and as a result they see subpar results. These might be high BW users or somethign else. I don’t use VyprVPN much but when I do a transfer a good amount of data from steam or other places. This might be why I was blacklisted.

  3. Their servers are unstable.

As I said before, no other VPNs I tried show this problem. I tried other systems in my house and they show the same BW isuses. I understand your point about trying somewhere else, but if other VPNs *do not have an issue*, then what would make VyprVPN unique here beyond what I said?

I also have used VyprVPN for a long time. maybe once a month. I did not experience these ultra poor BW issues before. This is unique. Maybe it is a server instability issue or somethign else.

I am talking with customer support and they are asking to debug this further. Will see where it goes.

I figured you were trolling since you kept ignoring the facts I was providing. Looks like this is confirmed.

As for experience, don’t make me laugh. Your suggestions (and skills), after the data I provided like testing the hdd is absolutely laughable. The fact you quote dunning-kreuger is a perfect reflection upon yourself. This is typical unfortunately of hubris filled keyboard warriors.

Obviously you have no little to no idea what’s going on, are in some sort of weird fanboy denial, or $$ biased (you work for VyprVPN do yah?).

Thanks for the amusing conversation though, I’m sure to use this in my future reviews of VyprVPN on how great their service is.
